Crew Chief - Public Services - Water Operations
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, lead and work with crews engaged in the construction, repair, and maintenance of a water distribution and wastewater collection system. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervise a small crew in construction, maintenance, and replacement of water or sewer mains and/or service lines. Inspect, diagnose, and repair failures in water and sewer mains. Supervise operation of equipment such as power plants, water pumps, water main tapping machine, sewer jetting machine, and air compressor. Build and adjust manholes and clean-outs. Install and repair fire hydrants and valves. Jet and clean sewer lines. Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, and the public. Interpret maps and drawings effectively. Maintain accurate daily records of time, material, and construction equipment. Repair and maintain water and wastewater systems. Implement and enforce of rules and regulations regarding employee and public safety, such as using flagmen and erecting barricades. Perform daily preventive maintenance check on vehicles and equipment. Inventory tools, equipment, and material on vehicles and in storage areas. Use good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Hear clearly to work safely when working around equipment and in street and alley traffic. Lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds; pull, push, and/or drag up to 150 pounds of repair equipment and materials. Work in trenches and confined spaces, using appropriate safety gear and precautions. Climb, crawl, kneel, squat, stoop, and/or bend freely when supervising or participating in water/wastewater repairs. Sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods of time while supervising or participating in construction repairs. Work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures, including heat, cold, temperature swings, and in inclement weather. Some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards, dust, toxic and chemical waste, using proper safety precautions. Serve on standby crew as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Keep assigned equipment and work area clean and in good order.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
High School Diploma or GED is required. Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class A, is required or must be obtained within 6 months. Must have and maintain a Class II Wastewater and Class C Water Distribution License or must be obtained within one year of hire.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
One year of experience is required in the maintenance and/or construction of water distribution and wastewater collection system. Knowledge required of TCEQ and AWWA Rules and Regulations. Knowledge required of: materials, equipment, and methods employed in water or sewer main construction or maintenance; trench preparation, construction of manholes and clean-outs. Experience required in supervising the work of crew or crews.
