Position Overview

WET is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Water Resources / CAD Specialist to join our Worland, Wyoming office. This position supports a wide range of water rights, surveying, drafting, mapping, and water resource management projects throughout Wyoming and the surrounding region.

The ideal candidate will have experience or education related to drafting, surveying, GIS, water resources, irrigation, or land development, along with a strong interest in applying technical and spatial analysis skills to real-world water resource projects. This role combines office-based drafting and mapping with fieldwork, data collection, and technical support for water rights and infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field reconnaissance, site inspections, and on-site investigations related to water rights, land surveys, and water infrastructure projects.
  • Perform surveying and field data collection activities, including GPS surveys, topographic mapping, and water measurement.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, and ESRI ArcGIS software to prepare and update:
    • Water rights maps and exhibits
    • Survey plats
    • Reservoir and irrigation layouts
    • Topographic and grading maps
    • Infrastructure and land development figures
  • Interpret aerial imagery and manipulate topographic datasets for reservoir design, irrigation planning, and land development projects.
  • Support Wyoming water rights permitting, petitioning, mapping, and compliance efforts.
  • Research historical land ownership and water rights records and assist with preparation of technical memoranda and reports.
  • Apply knowledge of Wyoming water law, PLSS, GIS, and surveying principles to support water resource and land management projects.
  • Coordinate with clients, landowners, engineers, surveyors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage assigned tasks independently while maintaining accuracy, organization, and efficiency.
  • Support proposal preparation and project planning efforts as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Associateโ€™s degree, Bachelorโ€™s degree, or equivalent experience in water resources, surveying, drafting, civil engineering technology, natural resources, GIS, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, ESRI GIS, or related drafting/mapping software.
  • Strong computer and technical skills, including Microsoft 365 and spatial data management tools.
  • Ability to interpret topographic data, aerial imagery, and mapping information.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and remote locations.
  • Valid Driverโ€™s License and insurability under company policy required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and abilities:

  • Experience with:
    • Wyoming water rights
    • Irrigation systems and agricultural operations
    • PLSS and survey principles
    • GPS data collection and field surveying
    • Reservoir and pond design support
    • Water measurement and compliance monitoring
    • Topographic surface development and grading
    • ESRI ArcGIS or GIS-based spatial analysis
  • Familiarity with Leica or similar survey equipment.
  • Field experience working in rural or agricultural environments.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and field-based work.
  • Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.
  • Will require travel and occasional overnight travel may be required.
