General Description
Orange County Solid Waste Management Department has an opening for a Temporary Recycling Materials Handler.This position is responsible for sorting materials received from various collection routes into marketable categories.
Schedule: 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Hours per Week: 10-30 hours a week within the schedule above based on Department needs. This position is only for six (6) months and will end after that period is reached.
* This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Fitness for Duty Assessment required.
Examples of Essential Functions
Examples of Essential Functions

Primary duties include lifting, sorting, and preparing a variety of electronic items for marketing and transport.
Collect recyclable materials from businesses, residences and governmental office buildings; separates and prepares recyclable materials for market. Pull out salvageable materials from landfill waste; inspects loads of recyclable materials to ensure they meet market standards and prepares recyclable materials for market.
Clean and maintain County's twenty-four hour drop-off site and other Solid Waste Convenience Centers on a scheduled basis; collects overflow from these sites; manages overflow and other contamination from sites; maintains recycling collection containers/dumpsters at drop-off sites.
Prepare items for shipping to market by handling recyclable glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, paper, and electronics; operating equipment associated with recycling operations including skid steer, forklift, balers, pickup trucks, lift gates and the like.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and one (1) year of related experience.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Physical Activities
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of standing, sitting, pushing, pulling, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, carrying, grasping, reaching, talking, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists and feet.
Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Worker is subject to fall hazard, pinch hazard, driving during heavy traffic and inclement weather and tripping over equipment.
Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; and in extreme temperatures of heat and cold.
Worker has potential to be exposed to potentially infectious bodily fluids (i.e. saliva from recyclables) and chemicals that may or may not cause burns or irritation to the skin, respiratory system or eyes.
