Produce Clerk

Primary Responsibilities

  • Greet, assist, and ring out all customers politely
  • Maintain company standards for perishables and stay up to date on all active safety procedures

Ensuring Health and Safety Codes, checking for pricing and expiration, and maintaining an organizational standard area.

  • To check, record, and retain cooler/freezer temperatures and maintenance
  • Stay up to date and in congruence with Health and Safety standards, as well as holding a working knowledge of cleaning supplies and various chemicals and machines within the department
  • To verify and successfully adjust the display of product so that displays are full, color contrast is emphasized, product is rotated, commodities are grouped, tables are set to the season, and adequate space has been allocated for high impulse/demand items.
  • To perform preparation of the backroom for receipt of merchandise, checking the load for quality/shortage/overage and code-dating all case items in the cooler, sorting cases by quality and degree of ripeness, storage of back stock, verification of the merchandise against the invoice.
  • Ability to comprehend and provide complex verbal instructions and descriptions concerning store policy and procedures, and usage of equipment.
  • To perform organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code-date all case items in the cooler/freezer.
  • To perform the computing of retail price from cost, complete price changes, PLU file and scale system maintenance, supervise the manual price-marking/labeling of merchandise without a UPC code.
  • To perform the movement of damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from shelves to the backroom, sorting of the materials, the return of damaged product to the warehouse for credit and the re-processing of product for sale or marking the product down in price.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Produce Clerk reports directly to the Produce Department Manager.

Qualifications

  • Basic Mathematics (Add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Prior experience with produce in a grocery setting

Specific tasks

  • Lift, twist, move and carry a maximum of 50 lbs., from the floor to shelving, or overhead racks in the store and cooler/freezer
  • Maintain active signage and pricing in all departmental areas
  • Care for signs, banners, and debris from daily operations

Work Environment Note:

Inside work with transitions of heat/cold/humidity/dust from backdoor/compressors/cooler/freezer/preparation area.
