Job Description

Saint Luke's is seeking a dynamic Vice President (VP) of Research to lead

and advance its research mission while expanding research opportunities. The VP will collaborate with leadership to shape the strategic vision and policies that align with Saint Luke's overarching mission.

This individual will work proactively to strengthen the research infrastructure, develop vital support services, and identify new funding opportunities ensuring the continued growth and success of Saint Luke's research initiatives.

Reporting Relationship

Reporting to the President, Central Region / President, Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, the Vice President of Research will oversee four direct reports: the Director of Research, Director of Cardiovascular Research, Director of the Human Research Protection Program, and the Assistant Vice President of Research. The total staff under the VP's leadership will comprise 97 full-time equivalents (FTE), including a team of biostatisticians, regulatory specialists, and budget and contracting analysts, all working together to support and advance the research mission.

Principal Accountabilities

The VP will foster a robust and collaborative research agenda, overseeing a well-balanced portfolio of diverse research programs. This individual will champion excellence by promoting the highest standards of research practices at all levels. The selected candidate will provide visionary leadership, offering guidance and mentorship to investigators on their roles and responsibilities, ensuring alignment with best practices and advancing the overall research mission.

The VP of Research will play a pivotal role in securing external funding from federal agencies, corporations, foundations, and individual donors to support and advance Saint Luke's research mission. Additionally, the VP will identify and capitalize on emerging research opportunities, driving the development of innovative programs and interdisciplinary initiatives. This individual will forge strategic industry and professional partnerships, while also serving as the primary public advocate for Saint Luke's research mission, elevating its visibility and impact both within and beyond the academic community.

Experience and Qualifications

Must possess an MD/DO, MD/PhD

Must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Missouri

ABMS Board Certification

Clinical specialty preferences: Cardiology, Neurology, and Oncology

Must have substantial experience in clinical research, demonstrating a history of success in this area

Experience as Principal Investigator on large-scale trials and/or grants is required (Regional or National Principal Investigator is ideal)

Must be able to provide effective leadership, guidance, and mentorship to investigators, helping them navigate their roles and responsibilities in conducting research

Candidates should be confident and comfortable in a philanthropic capacity, serving as a visible leader in the community and actively engaging in securing funding from external sources

Must be willing to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment

Desired Experience

Candidates must value a wide portfolio of research; the ideal candidate will have knowledge of clinical trials and grants

Have a track record of research productivity in trials or outcomes research

Presentation experience at national/internal conferences

Peer reviewed publication experience

Progressive leadership experience
