Job description

Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking a dedicated and safety-conscious School Bus Driver to join our team. The School Bus Driver will be responsible for driving a variety of vehicles, including buses, vans, and cars to transport students, faculty, guests, candidates, and performers around campus and to off-site locations. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of individuals within the Interlochen community. Flexible scheduling.

As a guardian of safe and seamless journeys, you'll contribute to the canvas of Interlochen's vibrant community, ensuring passengers experience not just transportation, but transformation. With nights, weekends, and holidays embracing the rhythm of this role, you'll be a beacon of reliability, a cornerstone of camaraderie, and a driving force propelling the Interlochen spirit forward. Flexible days and hours needed as scheduling based on travel demands. Flexible work schedules include some weekends and certain holidays (primarily 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day holidays). Work hours may vary depending on transportation needs

This position does not include split shifts and does not include bus stops. We are looking for both Full Time and Part Time positions with flexible schedules and shifts. Wage is $18.00 per hour.

Essential Duties:

  • Drivers fulfill campus transportation needs 24/7
  • Safely operate various vehicles, adhering to traffic rules, regulations, and Interlochen's safety protocols.
  • Transport students, faculty, guests, candidates, and performers to and from designated locations, both on and off campus.
  • Ensure the comfort and safety of passengers, providing excellent customer service and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Inspect vehicles regularly to ensure they are in proper working condition and report any maintenance issues.
  • Assist with loading and unloading luggage, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, mileage, and trip logs.
  • Adhere to schedules and routes, adjusting for traffic and weather conditions as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, colleagues, and passengers, providing timely updates and addressing any concerns.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and appearance of vehicles, both inside and out
  • Follow Interlochen's guidelines for handling emergencies and incidents during transportation.
  • Collaborate with the Transportation team to optimize route efficiency and provide input on operational improvements.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge to address minor issues.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently within minimum supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Adhere to a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, on-call, and holidays, as transportation needs may vary.

Education: High School Education or GED required
Experience:

  • 2 years of bus driving experience required, 3-5 years of bus driving experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in Transportation in a school or campus setting preferred.
  • Qualified applicants with current First Aid, CPR and AED certification preferred

Equipment Familiarity:

  • Familiar with Mac Laptop, Google Suites, MS Office Suites preferred.

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:

  • Valid CDL-B driver's license with Passenger and School Bus endorsement is required.
  • Valid driver's license required as well as ability to pass a motor vehicle background check.
  • Excellent driving record and strong understanding of traffic rules and regulations required.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and background check as well as a DOT physical.
  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA's insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to pass a random drug test.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules, weather conditions, and transportation needs.
  • Ability to load and unload luggage and assist passengers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders.
