Division: Gaming
Department: Console Gaming
Reports to: Console Gaming Lead
Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with occasional in-person meetings (location-dependent), may be expected to be on-site during convention dates, including the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Console Gaming Desk Attendant is an interactive, front-facing staff member responsible for creating a welcoming, smooth, and high-energy experience within the Console Free Play area. Operating under the Console Gaming Lead, you will act as a gaming guide, equipment tracker, and helpful ambassador for the convention. Your primary duty is to help attendees access and enjoy our massive library of games, securely checking out hardware provided by ASC's Esports vendor, and ensuring the gear is treated with respect. If you are a friendly, personable gamer who loves sharing your passion for video games and wants to represent the convention with pride, this role is a perfect match.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence may be required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your shift will center around attendee hospitality, console setups, and asset tracking:

  • Informed Guest Services & Decorum: Act as a welcoming ambassador for the convention. You will answer attendee questions with friendly, informed responses, and guide more complex or specialized questions to the appropriate person. At all times, you are expected to carry yourself with a high standard of decorum, warmth, and professionalism that befits Anthro SoCal's promise to host an excellent event
  • Game & Console Facilitation: Assist attendees in setting up and launching games in the console free play area. You will answer questions about different systems, games, or control layouts, utilizing your passion for gaming to enhance their experience
  • Controller & Equipment Checkout: Manage and checkout controllers, headsets, and cables from the Console Department's dedicated inventory (provided by ASC's Esports vendor).
  • Collaborative Team Support: Keep a proactive eye on the gaming area, assisting fellow team members, clearing gaming stations, managing queues during peak hours, and taking on other duties as needed to keep everything operating smoothly
Qualifications

Required:

  • Decorum & Hospitality: A genuinely friendly, patient, and personable attitude. You must be eager to interact with the public and maintain a highly professional demeanor as a representative of the convention
  • Fandom & Video Game Knowledge: A healthy passion for and strong knowledge base of modern and classic video games, consoles, and controller layouts to help attendees jump into their games easily
  • Attention to Detail: High reliability when recording attendee details and tracking gaming hardware, ensuring no inventory goes missing
  • Punctuality & Reliability: Strict adherence to your scheduled shift times. The gaming area is a massive draw for attendees, and stations must remain fully staffed to keep lines moving.

Preferred:

  • AV & Console Troubleshooting Skills: Familiarity with console menus, switching input channels on displays, and basic cable routing (HDMI, power cords, USB sync cables)
  • Customer Service or Rental Experience: Prior experience working in a library, retail environment, equipment check-out desk, arcade, or internet cafe
  • De-escalation Skills: The ability to stay completely calm, polite, and unbothered when managing packed gaming stations or handling crowded, high-energy rooms
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request
