Position Summary

Salem College, an NCAA Division III member institution and member of the USA South Athletic Conference, is seeking a passionate, energetic, and student-centered individual to serve as aVolunteer Assistant Softball Coach. This position will assist the Head Softball Coach in all aspects of operating a successful collegiate softball program while supporting the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes.

The Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach will play a key role in student-athlete development, practice planning, game preparation, and fostering a positive and competitive team culture. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy, emphasizing academic achievement, leadership development, and competitive excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Bullet Points)

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with coaching and instruction of all practices.
  • Ability to attend 80% or more of practices.
  • Develop and implement event-specific training plans and technical instruction.
  • Assist with practice planning, organization, and daily operations of the softball program.
  • Provide mentorship and support for student-athletes both athletically and personally.
  • Assist with meet preparation, travel, and competition-day coaching.
  • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability, and personal growth.
  • Support compliance with NCAA Division III, USA South Athletic Conference, and Salem College policies and procedures.
  • Assist with equipment management and facility upkeep related to the softball field area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Softball Coach.
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van to games.

Required Qualifications

HS Diploma required (bachelor's degree Preferred)

Previous playing and/or coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level preferred

Strong knowledge of fundamentals, strategies, and player development

Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

Commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion

This is a volunteer position and does not include monetary compensation. However, the position may provide valuable coaching experience, networking opportunities, and potential professional development within collegiate athletics.

Physical Functions
