Position Summary: The Research & Development Engineering Technician III is responsible for writing, executing and reporting on complex test plans in support of the team objectives, as outlined by the team leadership. They are a problem-solver for the team, and coordinator. This role assumes responsibility on behalf of the team, including and not limited to: serialized inventory; data collection and reporting; configuration management; specialized test protocols; and calibration. This role participates in team strategy and design review meetings, and may be asked to represent the team in customer encounters. The Technician III has the responsibility of assigning tasks to other Technicians on behalf of the team leadership. The Research & Development Engineering Technician III draws on 6+ years of firearms and test experience, integrated into a Research & Development design team. They will have an exceptional safety record, communication skills, related armorers’ skills, and specialized skills as a Technician on multiple weapon platforms. The Research & Development Engineering Technician III works in a team environment with the Research & Development Design Team, Design Engineers, other Engineering Technicians, the SEC and Range staff. This role may work with customers or other divisions of SIG SAUER.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Train and ensure safe and effective operation of test equipment according to manuals, work instructions, and industry standards for direct reports and self.
  • Meet the team's expectations for data collection, storage and reporting of all test results.
  • Must be able to reference small arms test documents, and trainable in any specialized testing required by the team.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and trust with the team, and help direct the day-to-day test efforts.
  • Learn and become proficient in the use of Calipers, Headspace Gages; Micrometers; Air Gage; Micro-height; Oehler; Blue light scanner; LTC Scanner; Weibel - Doppler Radar; Instron Machine; Instron Programming; Keyence System; Garmin; Recoil; High Speed Video; High Speed Cameras; Toxic Fume Chambers; Sound; Flash and other small arms test apparatus as directed by the team.
  • Create item numbers, change orders, and documents in Agile PLM.
  • Create and edit Engineering Bills of Material.
  • Check part availability and pull parts from inventory.
  • Manage serialized inventory, perform advanced part searches, and enter requisitions in Oracle EBS.
  • Travel infrequently.
  • May lead and actively volunteer for Continuous Improvement projects/tasks.
  • Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
  • Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Regular on-site attendance and punctuality are necessary functions of this position.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts, or in other functional areas, and/or facilities based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required, or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 6+ years of previous experience as an Engineering Technician.
  • Experience identifying and troubleshooting complex firearm malfunctions and using and maintaining firearms is a plus.
  • Maintain qualifications to act as a Range Safety Officer to include passing First Aid/Trauma Management classes. Maintain range certification while always handling and shooting firearms in accordance with SIG SAUER INC policy. Department of Defense firearm qualifications with M4, M17, M249, and M240 preferred. Pistol, rifle, and shotgun training certifications from a recognized firearms academy required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word). Proficiency with Oracle EBS preferred.
  • Prior test experience, including data analysis and report writing, required.
  • Familiarity with DoD and NATO test procedures preferred.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Able to operate independently at a high level and complete tasks in a timely manner. Adheres to break times, 15 minute breaks and 30 minute lunch breaks.
  • Problem-solving at each level is required. Engineering Technicians are expected to understand the team's goals and objectives and actively contribute to achieving them. Each team member is responsible for anticipating potential, recognizing effective solutions, and supporting the overall success of the team.

Working Conditions:

  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
