Reports to Position: Summer Library Program Volunteer

Pay Grade:N/A

Location:Marion Public Library


This volunteer position will end on August 1, 2026.


JOB SUMMARY

The Summer Library Program Volunteer position assists in registering participants, track reading progress, hand out prizes, and assist with high-energy events. Program preparation includes, but is not limited to set up, assisting with program monitoring, assisting patrons during programs, or assisting with clean-up. With this volunteer position, you will have the opportunity to participate in behind-the-scenes work of the library as well as working with the programming staff. This volunteer position is great for someone who wants to be involved with patrons of all ages.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED

  • Great patrons and assist with registering them in summer reading programs.
  • Assist children and families with logging reading minutes or completing activity sheets.
  • Help set up and clean up activity areas, crafts and event spaces.
  • Prepare materials for programs such as cutting, sorting or organizing supplies.
  • Guide children through craft projects, games or learning activities.
  • Shelve books or organize materials as directed by library staff.
  • Help maintain a tidy and welcoming environment.
  • Distribute prizes or reading incentives according to program guidelines.
  • Support library events by managing sign-in sheets, handing out materials, or assisting with crowd flow.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and diverse populations.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow directions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull as required.
  • Physical agility, strength, and dexterity necessary for handling library materials, including but not limited to retrieving, shelving, lifting, and moving library materials.
  • Ability to lift up to and push 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoor work setting.
  • May involve moderate noise levels and fast-paced periods during programs.


SCHEDULE

  • Flexible based on volunteer availability and program hours.
