What is a volunteer NGO software engineer?

Volunteer NGO Software Engineers are individuals who offer their technical skills and expertise without pay to non-governmental organizations (NGOs). They help design, develop, and maintain software solutions that support the missions of NGOs, such as improving operations, managing data, or enhancing outreach. These volunteers may work on websites, databases, mobile apps, or other digital tools, often collaborating remotely with global teams. Their contributions enable NGOs to operate more efficiently and extend their impact without incurring high technology costs.

How do volunteer NGO software engineers typically collaborate with non-technical team members?

Volunteer NGO Software Engineers often work closely with project managers, program coordinators, and field staff who may not have a technical background. Effective communication is crucial in translating technical concepts into accessible terms, gathering user requirements, and ensuring the software solutions align with the organization's goals. Regular meetings and collaborative tools help bridge the gap, allowing engineers to gather feedback and iterate on their work. This role offers a valuable opportunity to develop strong interpersonal skills while making a direct impact on the NGO’s mission.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer NGO software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer NGO Software Engineer, you need a solid foundation in software development, coding languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with open-source platforms, version control systems like Git, and project management tools is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset help you work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders, often in resource-constrained environments. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering impactful, sustainable technology solutions that support an NGO's mission and maximize limited resources.

Job Title: Embedded Software EngineerJob Description

We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the sustainment, modernization, and enhancement of the U.S. Navy's SPY-1 Radar System in Crane, Indiana. This engineer will play a critical role in designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining embedded software solutions that support one of the Navy's most mission-critical radar and defense systems. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex real-time embedded software challenges, support legacy system modernization efforts, and contribute directly to national defense capabilities. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in embedded software development, system integration, software architecture, and C/C++ development within highly technical environments. Located in Crane, Indiana, this role supports advanced radar sustainment efforts in partnership with Navy stakeholders and multidisciplinary engineering teams, including software, systems, hardware, and test engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, and modernize embedded software applications supporting SPY-1 Radar and related defense system technologies.
  • Analyze existing software systems and legacy codebases to identify functionality, reverse-engineer requirements, and implement scalable software solutions.
  • Lead software modernization initiatives, including refactoring and enhancement of existing C/C++ applications.
  • Drive system-level software design across embedded and real-time computing environments.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, systems engineering, and test teams to ensure successful software integration and mission performance.
  • Develop and implement software architectures that prioritize performance, maintainability, reliability, and long-term sustainment.
  • Support hardware/software integration activities, troubleshooting efforts, and performance optimization in complex embedded environments.
  • Define and execute software verification and validation strategies, including automated testing and system-level evaluations.
  • Participate in requirements development, requirements traceability, configuration management, and design reviews.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across software development activities.
  • Support software deployment, system integration, and testing efforts within laboratory and operational environments.
  • Contribute to Agile development activities, technical planning, and engineering process improvements.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of Embedded Software Development experience.
  • Experience in the Full Lifecycle Development.
  • Proficiency in programming languages: C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience with automated test frameworks, scripting, and test tools used for software validation (Python, MATLAB, or similar).
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance.
  • Proficient in software validation, bash, cameo, doors, and azure devops.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience supporting SPY-1 Radar, Aegis Combat System, SPY-6, naval combat systems, radar systems, sensor systems, or mission-critical defense platforms.
  • Experience within Department of Defense (DoD), Navy, aerospace, defense, or government-contracted engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with radar systems, signal processing applications, RF systems, or tactical weapon systems.
  • Experience supporting software sustainment, modernization, or reverse-engineering efforts on legacy systems.
Work Environment

The role is primarily onsite at the facility, with a preference for 100% onsite work but potentially open to an arranged hybrid schedule. Employees work a 9/80 schedule, operating in an office setting and utilizing lab environments as needed. The opportunity includes working on mission-critical technology that protects National Security, with the chance to engage in all phases from design to sustainment. The position offers long-term stable work with projected product operation through 2065 and high growth potential as the demand scales.
