Job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

CCAT is a key tower in Schwab Broker-Dealer Service Engineering. We build the Schwab Customer Identifier (SCID) — the unified identity layer that resolves the same client across Schwab affiliates and powers a true 360° view of every customer across all lines of business. As a Staff Engineer, you'll set the technical bar for how we build, how we adopt AI in our workflows, and how client-facing capabilities ship.

We're specifically seeking engineers shaped by product-engineering environments, product companies, or in-house engineering orgs — where you owned a system, not a statement of work. The bar at CCAT is high ownership and accountability: you treat the product as yours, you stay with what you ship, and you're measured by the outcome

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery of client-facing functionality from scoping through production rollout.
  • Set technical direction — architecture guidance, unblocking delivery, raising the engineering quality bar.
  • Build hands-on in Java on GCP and PCF; you remain a working engineer.
  • Establish team-level AI-assisted engineering practices — define how the team uses Copilot, Claude Code, agentic and spec-driven workflows; identify gaps and build the solutions to bridge them.
  • Mentor engineers and partner across product, architecture, vendors, and offshore teams.
What you have

Required Quialifications:

Education: Bachelor's in Engineering, CS, or related field.

AI-Assisted Engineering

  • Hands-on with GitHub Copilot and/or Claude Code in IDE/CLI workflows.
  • Working knowledge of agentic and spec-driven development — translating low-level design (class structures, API contracts, data models) into structured specs, with custom instructions and prompt engineering to establish team-level practices.
  • Uses AI for code, tests, reviews, and automation — with clear ownership of correctness.

Core Engineering

  • 10+ yrs: Java, Spring, cloud, REST + SOAP web services in high-volume, highly-available environments.
  • 4–6 yrs: Distributed/NoSQL DBs — PostgreSQL preferred, MongoDB, Yugabyte.
  • 4+ yrs: real-time data and streaming.
  • 4+ yrs: continuous build (Bamboo, Bitbucket/Git).
  • 3+ yrs: GCP and/or AWS/Azure.
  • 3+ yrs: event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, message queues).
  • 2+ yrs: cloud deployment in a CI/CD model.
  • 1+ yr: batch / data pipelines (Spring Batch, PySpark).

Delivery & Collaboration

  • Agile + Atlassian stack (JIRA, Confluence).
  • Drives projects to completion — anticipates risks, proposes creative solutions.
  • Experience working with vendors, offshore teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, influencing, and conflict-resolution skills; excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • End-to-end ownership partnering with technical and business experts; develops specs spanning architecture, design, production and test environments; drives POCs to validate new technology choices.
  • Strategic influence: drives data-based decisions, leads high-impact programs, and shapes business unit strategy and resource allocation.
  • Communication & standards: delivers persuasive verbal and written communication that engages diverse audiences; upholds high standards of reliability and subject-matter authority; raises quality benchmarks and establishes new standards of excellence.

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.

What’s in it for you

At Schwab, you’re empowered to shape your future. We champion your growth through meaningful work, continuous learning, and a culture of trust and collaboration—so you can build the skills to make a lasting impact. Our Hybrid Work and Flexibility approach balances our ongoing commitment to workplace flexibility, serving our clients, and our strong belief in the value of being together in person on a regular basis.

We offer a competitive benefits package that takes care of the whole you – both today and in the future:

  • 401(k) with company match and Employee stock purchase plan
  • Paid time for vacation, volunteering, and 28-day sabbatical after every 5 years of service for eligible positions
  • Paid parental leave and family building benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
