What is a volunteer international robotics engineer?

Volunteer International Robotics Engineers are professionals or enthusiasts who offer their expertise in robotics to organizations, educational institutions, or communities around the world, often without monetary compensation. Their work can include designing, building, and programming robots, as well as training others in robotics technology. These volunteers may participate in humanitarian projects, STEM education initiatives, or international robotics competitions. Their contributions help foster innovation, bridge technological gaps, and inspire the next generation of engineers globally.

What types of projects and collaborations can a volunteer international robotics engineer expect to be involved in?

As a Volunteer International Robotics Engineer, you may work on a variety of hands-on projects, such as designing prototypes, developing automation solutions, or providing technical training in underserved communities. Typically, you'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including local engineers, educators, and nonprofit coordinators, to tailor robotics solutions to community needs. The role often involves adapting to different resource levels, troubleshooting in the field, and communicating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, making adaptability and teamwork especially important.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer international robotics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer International Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, mechanical/electrical engineering, and programming, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, microcontrollers (like Arduino or Raspberry Pi), and robotics programming languages (e.g., Python, C++) is typically required. Outstanding collaboration, cultural adaptability, and communication skills help you work effectively in diverse international teams and community settings. These abilities are crucial for delivering impactful engineering solutions and fostering knowledge exchange in global volunteer projects.

What is the difference between Volunteer International Robotics Engineer vs International Robotics Technician?

AspectVolunteer International Robotics EngineerInternational Robotics Technician
Required CredentialsEngineering degree or equivalent, relevant certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree, specialized certifications
Work EnvironmentProject-based, international settings, collaborative teamsHands-on technical work, maintenance, troubleshooting in labs or field
Employer & Industry UsageNonprofits, NGOs, international development projectsManufacturers, research labs, industrial facilities

Volunteer International Robotics Engineers typically have engineering backgrounds and work on international projects, focusing on design and development. International Robotics Technicians usually have technical training and handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. While both roles involve robotics, the engineer focuses on creation and innovation, whereas the technician emphasizes technical support and operational tasks.

Job description

We're redefining how robots are deployed. Our platform enables users to simulate, test, and optimize entire robotic systems in parallel. By removing the barriers that have kept advanced robotics out of reach for all but the largest players, we're ushering in a new era of manufacturing—one where mass reshoring is not only viable, but inevitable.

With our industrial AI platform, we enable companies to design and optimize multi-robot workcells in the cloud, eliminating the need for manual robot programming. Our Resolver technology automatically generates collision-free robot programs by optimizing workcell layouts, task allocation, and robot paths, helping customers increase throughput and reduce the cost of industrial automation before deployment.

We are searching for a motivated Robotics Engineer to improve the performance, reliability and capabilities of the algorithmic backend of our solution. This person will play a vital role on the team and help shape the future of industrial automation.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Robotics, the Robotics Engineer will leverage their technical and theoretical knowledge to extend our core technology capabilities. This role will help develop and maintain our optimization framework for robotics, using state-of-the-art planning and AI methods, as well as contributing to novel research.

In this position, you will:
  • Work with a team of robotics engineers to solve real-world automation challenges using planning, optimization, and AI methods
  • Implement efficient algorithms and solvers specialized for robotics applications
