What is a volunteer full stack developer?

A Volunteer Full Stack Developer is an unpaid role where a developer contributes to projects by working on both front-end and back-end development tasks. They typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to build, improve, or maintain websites and applications. These positions are often found in non-profits, startups, or open-source communities, providing valuable experience while supporting a meaningful cause. Volunteers may collaborate with teams or work independently, depending on the project's needs. This role offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, expand technical skills, and build a professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer full stack developer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Full Stack Developer, you need strong programming skills in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, or PHP) technologies, often supported by a degree or self-taught experience in software development. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud services, databases, and possibly certifications in web development tools is typical. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are essential soft skills, especially when collaborating with diverse, often remote, teams. These abilities enable volunteers to effectively contribute to projects, deliver functional solutions, and support organizational goals despite the challenges of volunteer-based work.

What types of projects do volunteer full stack developers typically work on, and how is their work structured?

Volunteer Full Stack Developers often contribute to a wide range of projects, such as building or maintaining websites for nonprofits, developing internal tools to support community initiatives, or supporting open-source platforms. Their work is usually project-based and may involve collaboration with designers, project managers, and other developers, sometimes in a fully remote environment. Volunteers often have flexible schedules, allowing them to contribute as their availability permits, but they are still expected to communicate progress and meet key milestones. This structure provides valuable experience while making a tangible impact on the organization’s mission.

Job Description:

Full-Stack Developer (.NET / C# / AWS)
EP+Co. | Creative Technology Team
EP+Co.'s Creative Tech team builds belief for brands we love by creating digital experiences powered by innovative ideas, insights, and technology. As a team of technologists, problem-solvers, and creative collaborators embedded within a leading brand agency, we are focused on delivering digital experiences that drive meaningful business results.
We are seeking a Full-Stack Developer with strong backend expertise in C#/.NET, databases, and AWS to join our Creative Technology team. While this is a full-stack role, we are specifically looking for someone whose strengths lie in building scalable backend systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and data-driven solutions. You should also be comfortable contributing to modern front-end experiences built with React.
This is not a traditional enterprise engineering role. We are looking for someone who thrives in fast-moving, idea-driven environments and enjoys collaborating closely with designers, strategists, and creatives to translate conceptual ideas into engaging, scalable digital solutions. You should be comfortable with ambiguity, rapid iteration, and evolving requirements.
As a member of our development team, you will help design, build, and maintain modern digital solutions with an emphasis on C#/.NET development, AWS cloud infrastructure, and database-driven applications. You will collaborate across disciplines while contributing creatively to how experiences are conceived, designed, and built. This role reports to the Director of Development.
If you are excited about blending technology with creativity, thrive in dynamic environments, and have a strong foundation in building secure, scalable, and engaging digital experiences, we would love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain scalable full-stack web applications, REST APIs, and backend services using C#, .NET (ASP.NET Core), and React.
Build and maintain backend services with an emphasis on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
Design and optimize relational and NoSQL databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB) with a focus on performance, reliability, and security.
Develop and deploy cloud-native solutions on AWS, leveraging services including EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, CloudFront, and IAM.
Build and support CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), containerization, and cloud-native tooling.
Collaborate with designers, digital producers, QA, and fellow developers to translate creative concepts into high-quality digital solutions.
Who You Are:
A collaborative software developer with strong backend development skills and an interest in building modern full-stack applications.
Someone who enjoys solving technical challenges while balancing performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
Comfortable working across multiple technologies and contributing wherever the project requires.
Adaptable, curious, and excited to work in a creative, fast-moving agency environment.
A strong communicator who enjoys collaborating with both technical and non-technical teammates.
Required Skills & Experience:
3+ years of professional full-stack or backend development experience with modern technology stacks.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
Strong experience with C#/.NET, including ASP.NET Core, Web APIs, and background services.
Experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful APIs.
Experience designing and working with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or NoSQL databases.
Experience building applications on AWS using services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront, IAM, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS, and SNS.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and Git-based development workflows.
Working knowledge of application security principles and authentication technologies, including OAuth2, JWT, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and SAML.
Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks, preferably React.
Bonus Skills:
Familiarity with Python and AI-driven platforms or development workflows.
Familiarity with Contentful or other headless CMS platforms.
Experience with MarTech, AdTech, or marketing automation platforms.
Interest in emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, and cloud-native automation tools.
If you are passionate about building modern applications with C#/.NET, AWS, and cloud technologies, and enjoy collaborating with creative teams to deliver innovative digital experiences, we would love to hear from you! $70,000.00 - $85,000.00
