What is a volunteer full stack developer?

A Volunteer Full Stack Developer is an unpaid role where a developer contributes to projects by working on both front-end and back-end development tasks. They typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to build, improve, or maintain websites and applications. These positions are often found in non-profits, startups, or open-source communities, providing valuable experience while supporting a meaningful cause. Volunteers may collaborate with teams or work independently, depending on the project's needs. This role offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, expand technical skills, and build a professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer full stack developer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Full Stack Developer, you need strong programming skills in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, or PHP) technologies, often supported by a degree or self-taught experience in software development. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud services, databases, and possibly certifications in web development tools is typical. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are essential soft skills, especially when collaborating with diverse, often remote, teams. These abilities enable volunteers to effectively contribute to projects, deliver functional solutions, and support organizational goals despite the challenges of volunteer-based work.

What types of projects do volunteer full stack developers typically work on, and how is their work structured?

Volunteer Full Stack Developers often contribute to a wide range of projects, such as building or maintaining websites for nonprofits, developing internal tools to support community initiatives, or supporting open-source platforms. Their work is usually project-based and may involve collaboration with designers, project managers, and other developers, sometimes in a fully remote environment. Volunteers often have flexible schedules, allowing them to contribute as their availability permits, but they are still expected to communicate progress and meet key milestones. This structure provides valuable experience while making a tangible impact on the organization’s mission.

Full Stack Developer co-op

Job description

Remote (Canada) Full-time (40 hrs/week) Term: January 4 - April 22, 2027

About Flexspring

Everything connects. That's not just our tagline - it's the whole job.

Flexspring is an iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) built for one of the thornier problems in enterprise software: getting HR systems to actually talk to each other. We link payroll, recruiting, benefits, and HRIS platforms API-to-API so data moves between them cleanly and in near real-time, with no manual re-entry anywhere. The results back it up - 3,000+ integrations delivered, 800+ clients including Fortune 500 companies, ADP Marketplace Platinum Partner, and named HR Data Integration Experts of the Year 2025. And we do it all as a remote-first team spread across Canada and beyond.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Full Stack Software Developer Co-op to join our R&D team - and we'll be upfront about what that means.

This is real experience, in the fullest sense. No throwaway side project, no busywork to fill the term - from your first weeks you'll work on our actual product, as a real part of the team, shipping features that real customers depend on. Many of our co-ops go on to join us full-time after graduation.

You'll work mainly in a Java-based stack, and you'll quickly find that integration work is half code, half business reasoning - every feature exists because a real company needs its HR data to move without breaking. If you like building things that ship, and you tend to ask "what is this really for?" before writing a line of code, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Building and improving features in Flexspring's product - and understanding the customer problem each one solves
  • Writing backend and full stack code in Java and JavaScript
  • Working with APIs and the data flowing between HR systems, where getting the small details right is the whole job
  • Using modern tooling, AI included, to work efficiently - and reviewing what it produces with a careful eye before it ships
  • Writing and running tests so you know your work holds up before it reaches a customer
  • Collaborating with experienced developers through code reviews and team discussions

What We're Looking For

  • Strong analytical thinking. You like connecting the work in front of you to the reason it matters - the why, the outcome, the customer on the other end. Seeing the full picture is more satisfying to you than just closing a ticket.
  • A thoughtful approach to new tools. You enjoy picking up unfamiliar technology, including AI tools, and using it to work faster and smarter. You also know that generating output is only the start - the real value is in reviewing it, catching what's off, and being able to stand behind the result.
  • You've already completed minimum one co-op term or have some relevant professional work experience - this won't be your first time in a real work environment
  • You're currently studying Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • A solid foundation in Java and JavaScript
  • Some exposure to Spring and JUnit (school projects absolutely count)
  • You've worked with or learned about APIs
  • You're curious, motivated, and enjoy getting to the bottom of a problem

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with REST APIs, React, GraphQL, Groovy, JMS, or SOAP
  • Interest in integration platforms (iPaaS) and how systems connect
  • Curiosity about how large systems talk to each other - and what happens when they don't

What You'll Walk Away With

  • Real, hands-on experience shipping to a production platform that real customers rely on
  • Mentorship from senior developers who'll invest in how you think, not just the code you write
  • A working understanding of how HR data actually moves between enterprise systems
  • Real practice using AI and modern dev tooling the way strong engineers do - fast, but with judgment
  • Competitive co-op pay
  • Flexible hours in a remote-first environment
  • A strong chance to grow into a full-time role after graduation
