Volunteer Embedded Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining the software that controls robotic systems, requiring programming and embedded systems skills. In contrast, Volunteer Mechanical Engineers work on designing and building the physical components of robots, emphasizing mechanical design and hardware integration. Both roles are essential in robotics projects but differ in their technical focus and daily tasks.

What does a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics do?

A Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics designs, develops, and tests software that operates on hardware devices within robotic systems. They typically work with microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators to enable robots to perform specific tasks. As a volunteer, their work often supports research, educational, or nonprofit projects, contributing technical expertise to advance innovative robotics solutions. Tasks may include writing firmware, debugging code, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to integrate hardware and software components.

How does a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics typically collaborate with hardware and mechanical teams?

As a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics, you will work closely with hardware and mechanical engineers to integrate software with physical components. This collaboration often includes joint troubleshooting sessions, regular design meetings, and iterative testing to ensure that firmware interacts correctly with sensors, actuators, and control boards. Clear communication and a willingness to learn about hardware constraints are key, as your code may need to adapt to changes in hardware design. This teamwork fosters a dynamic and supportive environment, especially in volunteer or non-profit settings where resourcefulness and flexibility are highly valued.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Embedded Software Engineer in Robotics, you need a solid understanding of embedded C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and real-time operating systems, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and robotics-specific platforms such as ROS (Robot Operating System) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and tackle complex technical issues. These combined skills are crucial for developing reliable, efficient robotic systems that meet project goals and function safely in real-world conditions.

Job description

The future of aerospace and defense starts here.
Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.
Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team. A team that will mold tomorrow's technologies while deploying today's best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.
As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer at Ursa Major, you will design, develop, and maintain the software powering our engines, vehicles, and avionics systems. You will be part of a small, high-impact team building flight software at the cutting edge of reliability, safety, and performance. This role requires a detail-oriented, self-driven engineer who thrives on solving complex problems and advancing the state of the art in aerospace.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software for avionics throughout the product lifecycle
  • Develop and maintain ground support software tools and systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define and deliver new software features
  • Document designs, code, and procedures to ensure maintainability and compliance
  • Debug, optimize, and support software and hardware integration efforts

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 4+ years of professional experience in embedded C/C++ development for ARM, SoC, or FPGA softcore platforms
  • Hands-on experience with hardware interface programming (timers, interrupts, communication protocols, ADCs, etc.)
  • Proficiency reading schematics and debugging with hardware tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers)
  • Experience using version control systems such as Git
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and collaborative settings, managing multiple priorities

Desirable Experience:
  • Experience with software development standards such as RTCA DO-178
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and/or other scripting languages
  • Exposure to continuous integration, automated build/test, and hardware-in-the-loop systems
  • Understanding of FPGA development and HDL
  • Experience with RTOS and/or Linux-based embedded systems
  • Familiarity with controls engineering (sensors, actuators, and motors)

Benefits Include
  • Unlimited PTO - Vacation, Sick, Personal, and Bereavement
  • Paid maternity/paternity/adoptive leave
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance; Tax Advantage Accounts (HSA/FSA); Employer Paid Short and Long-Term Disability, Basic Life, AD&D and EAP Program; Additional Benefit Options Including Voluntary Life, Emergency Medical Transport and Pet Insurance
