What is a volunteer conversation designer?

Volunteer Conversation Designers are individuals who offer their time and expertise to design conversational experiences, such as chatbots or virtual assistants, without monetary compensation. Their responsibilities include creating dialogue flows, scripting responses, and ensuring that interactions are natural, engaging, and helpful to users. Typically, they collaborate with non-profit organizations, community projects, or open-source initiatives to improve communication tools. This role is ideal for those interested in user experience, artificial intelligence, and language design who want to make a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer conversation designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Conversation Designer, you need a strong understanding of user experience (UX) principles, language structure, and conversational flow, often supported by experience in linguistics, writing, or UX design. Familiarity with chatbot development platforms like Dialogflow, Microsoft Bot Framework, or Voiceflow is commonly required. Excellent communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you create user-friendly dialogues and work effectively with diverse teams. These abilities ensure the creation of engaging, accessible, and helpful conversational experiences that meet both user and organizational needs.

What are the main challenges faced by volunteer conversation designers, and how can they be addressed?

Volunteer Conversation Designers often work with diverse teams and limited resources, which can make gathering consistent feedback and iterating on designs challenging. Additionally, ensuring that conversation flows are inclusive and accessible to all users is crucial, especially in nonprofit or community-driven projects. To succeed, it's important to maintain clear communication with stakeholders, document design decisions, and leverage user testing whenever possible. Collaborating with subject matter experts and regularly reviewing user interactions can help improve the effectiveness and inclusivity of conversational experiences.

Job description

Omitron is seeking a Network Design Liaison to support the SPARTAN effort in Colorado Springs, CO. This role sits at the intersection of network architecture and technical project management, serving as the primary bridge between customer requirements and delivered network infrastructure solutions. The ideal candidate can walk into a customer conversation, translate an operational need into a sound network design, and then own the plan that gets it built, tested, and delivered on schedule.
This is not a purely technical design role, and it is not a purely administrative PM role. The Network Design Liaison is expected to be credible in both worlds: able to evaluate and shape network architecture decisions, and able to run the disciplined project management processes (scheduling, risk tracking, stakeholder communication, deliverable management) that keep complex infrastructure work on track.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between customers, engineering teams, and program leadership for new and evolving network infrastructure solutions under SPARTAN.
  • Translate customer mission and operational requirements into network design concepts, working sessions, and formal design documentation.
  • Lead or support requirements-gathering sessions, design reviews, and technical interchange meetings with customer stakeholders.
  • Coordinate across engineering, security, and program management functions to ensure proposed solutions are technically sound, deliverable within scope, and compliant with applicable security and network architecture standards.
  • Own delivery communication: status reporting, milestone tracking, and clear articulation of technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce new capabilities into customer environments, and help shape the scope and approach for those efforts.
  • Support proposal development and rough-order-of-magnitude estimating for new network design and integration efforts as needed.
  • Maintain documentation of network designs, architecture decisions, and lessons learned to support future solutioning.
  • Travel to Government and mission-partner locations for customer meetings, Technical Exchange Meetings (TEMs), conferences, site visits, and other engagements.

Required Qualifications
  • US Citizenship Required
  • Security Clearance Required: Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: 8+ years of relevant experience across network engineering/architecture and technical project or program delivery, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of network infrastructure design principles (routing/switching, network segmentation, WAN/LAN architecture, and related technologies).
  • Working knowledge of project management fundamentals: scheduling, risk/issue tracking, scope management, and stakeholder communication.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to customers and non-technical stakeholders, and to manage customer relationships directly.
  • Experience operating in a customer-facing solutions or delivery role, translating requirements into actionable technical plans.
  • Experience working directly with Government customers, mission partners, or external stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify customer needs and connect those needs with appropriate technical capabilities and internal resources.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25-50%.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DoD, Space Force, NRO, or other federal/IC network infrastructure programs.
  • Industry certifications such as PMP, CCNA/CCNP, or equivalent network and project management credentials.
  • Prior experience as a Solutions Engineer, Solutions Architect, or Systems Engineer in a govcon environment.
  • Familiarity with the SPARTAN program or similar network infrastructure initiatives.
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed Government customers or mission partners.
  • Familiarity with cloud and hybrid-cloud environments.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $160,000 to $210,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, education, technical expertise, certifications, security clearance, geographic location, internal equity, market conditions, contract requirements, and other factors.
Benefits include:
  • Health, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • HSA or FSA accounts
  • Company paid ST/LT Disability and AD&D insurance
  • Paid Federal Holidays
  • Paid Vacation Leave and Sick Leave
  • Parental Leave
  • 401k with company match
  • Supplemental Insurance options like AFLAC
  • Professional Development Reimbursement
  • Voluntary Life Insurance
