Your role and responsibilities

IBM is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Backend Developer to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for Interns to contribute to enterprise-scale software development projects, learn from experienced engineers, and grow within a global technology leader. You'll help build and maintain backend systems that power IBM's internal and external applications. You will have the opportunity to experience full stack development working across the entire system architecture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of backend services, APIs, and data integrations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including front-end developers, architects, and product managers.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging activities.
  • Support deployment and monitoring of backend applications in cloud, enterprise, and hybrid environments.
  • Continuously learn and apply best practices in software engineering and backend architecture.

Required education

High School Diploma/GED

Required technical and professional expertise

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Must have basic knowledge in many of the following technology areas:

  • Understanding of software development concepts.
  • Experience in one or more of the following programming languages: (C, C++, Golang, Ruby, Python, Perl, SQL, Java, JavaScript, Shell scripting)
  • Software Development Lifecycle & Agile Methodologies (Scrums, DevOps workflows, exposure to CI/CD pipelines and tools like Jenkins or Github Actions)
  • APIs.
  • Operating systems and how they work (i.e. Operating systems courses); Container technologies; Internet Services; and/or Managed Services.
  • AI fundamentals and coding assistants
  • Communication skills and the ability to learn new technologies and procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to learn.
  • Exposure to Agile Methodologies: Participation in agile methodologies, collaborating with team members to deliver solutions, with a focus on understanding the principles and practices of agile development.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Experience in JSON, Web Services
  • Knowledge of computer security and cryptography fundamentals
  • Understanding of virtualization concepts and cloud operations
  • Experience with containerization tools like Docker or Kubernetes * Exposure to/understanding of Assembly language and related programming techniques
