Job description

Job Title: VMware Virtualization SME
Location: New York, NY
Type: Contract To Hire
Responsibilities
  • Provide expert-level strategy, design, and ongoing support for large-scale enterprise virtualization platforms within the Americas region.
  • Lead migration efforts to VMware Cloud Foundation 9 with zero downtime, ensuring compliance and security standards are met.
  • Design highly available, low-latency VMware environments including vSphere, NSX-T, and vSAN.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code using Ansible, Terraform, PowerCLI to automate provisioning, patching, and lifecycle management.
  • Deploy AI-powered chat ops for ticket triage, predictive alerting, and root cause analysis utilizing Aria Operations and related tools.
  • Configure, monitor, and fine-tune performance dashboards and thresholds in Aria Operations, VRLI, and VRNI, leveraging AI for anomaly detection.
  • Facilitate environment-wide process improvements in change, release, and incident management to increase efficiency and security.
  • Interface with vendors and global IT teams to ensure platform alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution to maintain RPO of 5 seconds and RTO of 15 minutes for critical workloads.
  • Provide Tier 2/3 support for production workloads, including on-call rotations, health checks, OS, firmware, and storage updates through automated pipelines.
  • Liaise with application owners and stakeholders to gather requirements, ensure service delivery, and monitor performance metrics.
  • Deliver executive dashboards reporting on SLA compliance, platform health, and cost savings initiatives.

Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of IT experience with 5-7+ years supporting large VMware environments (vSphere 8+, NSX-T, vSAN).
  • Proven experience migrating legacy VMware infrastructures to VMware Cloud Foundation 9 or newer cloud-native systems.
  • Strong automation skills utilizing PowerCLI, vRealize Automation, Ansible, Terraform, and scripting with PowerShell and Python.
  • Hands-on experience with Aria Operations suite (formerly vRealize Operations), VRLI, and VRNI for log analytics and network insight.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise storage solutions (EMC/Isilon, Pure Storage, Dell/NetApp SAN, iSCSI) and vSAN integration.
  • Advanced networking knowledge covering TCP/IP fundamentals, VLAN configuration, routing, and NSX T features like micro-segmentation and firewalls.
  • Experience applying AI operations concepts such as predictive monitoring, automated root cause analysis, LLM-driven chat ops, and capacity forecasting.
  • Proven ability to optimize costs through rightsizing VMs, leveraging ephemeral instances, and improving TCO.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong project management capabilities, focusing on outcome-based results, preferably with Agile and ITIL experience.
