Job Title: Data Analyst [Analytics and Visualization Specialist]
Location: Richmond, VA

The Virginia Department of Health's Division of Informatics and Information Systems is seeking an Analytics and Visualization Specialist to assist with communicable disease data reporting and analysis. The Division of Informatics and Information Systems is responsible for the organization, presentation, analysis, and verification of epidemiological health information across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Analytics and Visualization Specialist will be responsible for data analysis and development of data visualization projects for various communicable diseases, primarily for COVID-19.
This position will report to the Division of Informatics and Information Systems (DIIS) Data Analytics Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Leverages appropriate analytic tools (SQL, Tableau Prep, Tableau Desktop, R, GCP, others)to integrate, clean, and transform public health and healthcare data.
2. Builds analyses and visualizations, dashboards using appropriate software (Tableau Desktop, R/Python, GCP, others) for a variety of purposes and audiences. Purposes may include public reporting, performance evaluation, decision analytics, data quality analysis, and/or scientific publication. Audiences may include the public, healthcare providers, community action groups, other government agencies, specific VDH disease programs, and/or VDH leadership.
3. Maintains, republishes, and enhances data products according to established cadences(e.g., daily, weekly, annually).
4. Works collaboratively with business stakeholders and subject-matter experts to define and refine requirements.
5. Documents detailed description of data cleaning steps, sources, filters, assumptions, and purposes.
6. Maintains Documentation related to data visualization processes, tools, and best practices while continuing to enhance existing processes and procedures.
7. Proactively identifies and communicates data quality issues and addresses issues arising from data processing.
8. Conducts other duties as requested/assigned.
9. Communication to stakeholders both internal and external via email, PPT presentations as well as internal presentations
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education
• Strong data analysis skills in SQL, Tableau, R/Python, and Microsoft Excel
• Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups and projects with defined timelines
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong communication skills
• Self-starter
Preferred Qualifications:
• Preferred > 2 years' experience with Tableau and SQL
• Familiarity with health/public health data
• Flexibility to work on multiple projects/issues simultaneously.
• Knowledge of relational databases.
• WordPress knowledge
• ArcGIS/working with geospatial data
