What Is a Visual Stylist?

A visual stylist helps design the overall merchandise floorplan and display at a retail store. As a visual stylist, your job duties are to assess foot traffic and customer choices and build visually interesting displays that attract new customers and increase sales. If you work for a large retailer, you're responsible for incorporating brand messaging into the store's design. The qualifications for this career include prior experience in merchandising or retail, preferably in a similar role, as well as a talent for interior design and styling. You also need interpersonal and leadership skills as you often direct other stylists and artists, such as window dressers, to carry out your vision.

How does a Visual Stylist typically collaborate with sales teams and store managers to enhance the customer experience?

Visual Stylists work closely with sales teams and store managers to ensure that merchandise displays are both visually appealing and strategically arranged to drive sales. Regular communication helps align visual merchandising with current promotions and inventory levels. By collaborating on floor layouts and product placement, Visual Stylists support a cohesive shopping environment that reflects brand standards and maximizes customer engagement. This teamwork often involves adapting displays based on feedback from sales staff who interact directly with customers.

To thrive as a Visual Stylist, you need a keen eye for design, strong knowledge of fashion or interior trends, and experience in visual merchandising, often supported by a relevant degree or certification.
