What is visual design?

Visual design is a field focused on the aesthetics and graphical elements of a product, website, or digital interface. It combines principles of graphic design, color theory, typography, and layout to create visually appealing and effective communications. Visual designers work to ensure that interfaces are both attractive and functional, enhancing user experience by guiding attention and conveying brand identity. Their work often overlaps with UI design, but visual design prioritizes the look and feel rather than the structure or usability alone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual designer?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need a strong foundation in design principles, typography, color theory, and proficiency with a degree in graphic or visual design. Mastery of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital platforms or prototyping tools like Figma is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills set outstanding visual designers apart. These skills ensure the creation of compelling visuals that effectively communicate ideas, align with brand goals, and engage target audiences.

How do visual designers typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual designers frequently work alongside UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that the visual aspects of a product align with the overall user experience and technical requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, providing assets, and iterating on feedback from different stakeholders. Clear communication and openness to feedback are crucial, as visual designers must balance creative vision with practical constraints and user needs. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive, visually appealing, and user-friendly final products.

Job description

Join Our Team at Wanderboat

Wanderboat is an AI map search for local discovery โ€” think โ€œTikTok meets Google Maps,โ€ designed for real-world exploration. We combine our POI search engine, multi-step Thinking Agent, and Vision Understanding model to see the world the way you do. No walls of text โ€” just curated feeds + a map that surface the best dining, shows, attractions, hotels, and experiences wherever you are.

Weโ€™re post-Series A (~$100M post), backed by top-tier investors, and seeing breakout traction in NYC, SF, Chicago, and LA with more than 6M organic monthly visits.

We believe the next generation of search and recommendation should come from great content instead of garbage websites. Thatโ€™s why we built our own first-party content index, search, and personalization system. Wanderboat is a first-of-its-kind AI-powered map search and local vibe-driven community, not a wrapper on APIs.

If youโ€™re excited about AI, culture, visual storytelling, and shaping how people discover the real world, we want to talk.

About the Role

Weโ€™re looking for a Visual Designer to define and evolve how Wanderboat looks, feels, and shows up in the world.

Youโ€™ll shape a distinctive visual identity across brand, marketing, content, social, web, campaigns, and key product touchpoints, working closely with leadership, growth, product, and content teams.

This is a high-ownership role for someone with exceptional visual taste and strong craft who can turn ambitious or ambiguous ideas into clear, memorable creative. You care deeply about typography, composition, imagery, storytelling, and building a brand that feels distinctive, culturally relevant, and unmistakably Wanderboat.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Brand & Visual Identity

  • Define and evolve Wanderboatโ€™s visual identity across digital and physical touchpoints.
  • Build and maintain a cohesive brand system spanning typography, color, imagery, illustration, motion, composition, and graphic elements.
  • Partner with leadership to translate Wanderboatโ€™s vision, personality, and positioning into a recognizable visual language.
  • Create scalable guidelines and systems that maintain consistency while giving the brand room to evolve.

Marketing & Content

  • Create high-impact visual work across social, campaigns, product launches, web, presentations, partnerships, and digital content.
  • Translate Wanderboatโ€™s product and AI capabilities into compelling visual stories that are simple, engaging, and easy to understand.
  • Partner with growth and content teams to develop creative concepts that strengthen the brand and drive awareness, engagement, and conversion.
  • Develop visual concepts and formats that allow Wanderboat to participate authentically in culture and stand out across consumer channels.

Product Visual Design

  • Partner with product designers to bring Wanderboatโ€™s brand language and visual craft into key product experiences across mobile and web.
  • Help ensure that Wanderboatโ€™s brand and product feel like one cohesive experience.
  • Contribute visual patterns and assets to the design system where brand expression and product experience intersect.

AI & Creative Exploration

  • Explore generative AI and emerging creative tools as part of the design and ideation process.
  • Experiment with new forms of visual storytelling, personalization, generative content, and AI-assisted creative production.
  • Develop workflows that combine strong human taste with the speed and possibilities of AI.
  • Stay current on emerging creative, cultural, and design trends and identify opportunities to push Wanderboatโ€™s visual language forward.

Creative Collaboration

  • Work cross-functionally with growth, product, content, engineering, and AI/ML from concept through execution.
  • Participate in brainstorms, creative reviews, and launches, bringing a strong visual point of view to the work.
  • Use performance insights, user feedback, and experimentation to refine creative when relevant.
  • Help raise the overall creative bar and build a culture of strong visual thinking across the company.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 1โ€“3 years of experience in visual, brand, or graphic design, ideally at a fast-moving startup, consumer technology company, agency, or high-bar creative team.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellent visual design, typography, layout, composition, and visual storytelling.
  • Strong visual taste and attention to detail, with a high bar for polished, thoughtful execution.
  • Experience designing across a range of surfaces such as web, social, campaigns, presentations, digital content, and marketing assets.
  • A solid understanding of brand systems and the ability to apply an established visual language consistently across different formats and touchpoints.
  • Strong concepting skills โ€” able to take a brief or idea, explore multiple visual directions, and turn it into compelling creative.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, incorporating feedback, and iterating quickly without losing attention to craft.
  • Curious about consumer culture, visual trends, and emerging creative formats, with an instinct for what feels fresh and relevant.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with designers, marketers, product teams, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent professional design tools.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working on a consumer-facing brand, particularly at a startup or high-growth company.
  • Experience designing AI products, consumer apps, travel, local discovery, maps, social, or content platforms.
  • Experience with video editing, motion design, animation, illustration, photography, 3D.
  • Experience designing branded merchandise, swag, or other physical brand touchpoints.
  • Experience experimenting with generative AI and AI-assisted creative tools as part of your design workflow.
  • Familiarity with product design systems and an interest in how brand expression can extend into digital product experiences.
  • Experience creating social-first content or collaborating with creators and influencers.
  • A strong interest in food, travel, local culture, and discovering new places and experiences.

Why Join Us?

  • Backed by top investors, with a team including former builders from Microsoft AI, Meta, and Google.
  • Opportunity to help shape how people explore cities in the AI era.
  • High ownership and direct impact on product growth and community strategy.
  • Work on products that connect digital intelligence with real-world experiences.
  • Build the foundation for a scalable local community and ambassador ecosystem from the ground up.
