What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need a strong foundation in design principles, typography, color theory, and proficiency with a degree in graphic or visual design. Mastery of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital platforms or prototyping tools like Figma is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills set outstanding visual designers apart. These skills ensure the creation of compelling visuals that effectively communicate ideas, align with brand goals, and engage target audiences.

How do visual designers typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual designers frequently work alongside UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure that the visual aspects of a product align with the overall user experience and technical requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, providing assets, and iterating on feedback from different stakeholders. Clear communication and openness to feedback are crucial, as visual designers must balance creative vision with practical constraints and user needs. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive, visually appealing, and user-friendly final products.

What is the difference between Visual Design vs Graphic Design?

AspectVisual DesignGraphic Design
FocusCreating visual concepts, layouts, and user interfaces for digital productsDesigning visual content for print and digital media, including logos, posters, and branding materials
SkillsUI/UX principles, typography, color theory, digital toolsTypography, layout, branding, print production
Work EnvironmentPrimarily digital, web, app interfacesPrint studios, advertising agencies, digital media
Common UsageWebsites, apps, digital productsPrint media, branding, marketing materials

While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Design primarily focuses on digital interfaces and user experience, whereas Graphic Design emphasizes visual content for print and branding. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or project focus.

Is AI replacing graphic designers?

AI tools are increasingly used in graphic design to automate repetitive tasks and generate ideas, but they do not fully replace the creative and strategic skills of graphic designers. Designers who adapt by integrating AI into their workflow and developing skills in digital tools remain essential for producing unique, high-quality visual content.

What is visual design?

Visual design is a field focused on the aesthetics and graphical elements of a product, website, or digital interface. It combines principles of graphic design, color theory, typography, and layout to create visually appealing and effective communications. Visual designers work to ensure that interfaces are both attractive and functional, enhancing user experience by guiding attention and conveying brand identity. Their work often overlaps with UI design, but visual design prioritizes the look and feel rather than the structure or usability alone.

What is the career path of a Visual Designer?

A Visual Designer typically starts as a junior or entry-level designer, developing skills in design tools like Adobe Creative Suite and gaining experience in branding, UI, or graphic design. With experience, they can advance to senior designer, lead designer, or specialize in areas such as UX, art direction, or creative management, often building a portfolio and acquiring certifications to support growth.

What degree do you need to be a Visual Designer?

A visual designer typically holds a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field. Strong skills in design software like Adobe Creative Suite and a compelling portfolio are also essential for the role.

What does a Visual Designer do?

A Visual Designer creates visual concepts for digital or print media to communicate ideas and enhance user experience. They use design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator and focus on layout, color, typography, and imagery to produce engaging visuals that align with brand identity and project goals.

Job description

Hungry, Humble, Honest, with Heart.
The Opportunity
Are you a visionary leader with a strong design sensibility, proven experience in scaling creative teams, and a passion for elevating user experiences? If so, you will want to join our dynamic User Experience Design organization at Nutanix, where you'll have the opportunity to define the visual aesthetic of our product portfolio and inspire a talented team to transform complex technical concepts into beautifully intuitive digital experiences.
About the Team
You will join a talented global design organization at Nutanix, comprising Visual Designers, UX Designers, UX Researchers, and UX Engineers, dedicated to delivering elegant and user-centric solutions for complex technical systems. This team fosters a culture of creativity and collaboration, striving to simplify cloud computing through high-quality design. Together, we aim to enhance the product experience and elevate the Nutanix brand within the industry by prioritizing user needs and delivering aesthetically pleasing digital experiences.
You will report to the Senior Director of Design, who values strong design acumen and people-centric leadership. This manager is committed to encouraging a collaborative environment that drives cross-functional projects to success. The role is hybrid, with the requirement for the hire to be in the office three days a week, promoting effective collaboration within the team while also allowing for flexibility in a remote setup.
This role does not require travel; however, the Visual Design Director is expected to be onsite three days a week to engage closely with the team and stakeholders, ideally prioritizing local candidates or those willing to relocate to the San Jose area.
Your Role
  • Lead and scale a high-performing visual design team across multiple geographies.
  • Develop and execute a long-term vision for the Visual Design function that aligns with business objectives.
  • Drive the creation and maintenance of a scalable and accessible design system in collaboration with engineering.
  • Elevate design quality across the Nutanix product portfolio, ensuring clarity and competitive differentiation.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering both technical and soft skills for success in enterprise environments.
  • Advocate for the value of visual design at all organizational levels.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and marketing to ensure cohesive design and brand alignment.
  • Establish a strong team culture that attracts top-tier talent and promotes inclusivity and creativity.

What You Will Bring
  • Strong design sensibility with expertise in Visual Design, Graphic Design, or related fields.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing and scaling creative teams in fast-paced environments.
  • Mastery of UI design principles, including typography, color theory, layout, and hierarchy.
  • Deep experience in producing and managing enterprise-grade design systems.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility (WCAG) and inclusive design principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate across diverse functions and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing or related technical domains is a significant plus.
  • Experience with mentoring and developing designers to succeed in complex environments.

Work Arrangement

In locations where our workplace policy applies (i.e. San Jose, Durham, Mexico City, Bangalore, Pune, Hoofddorp, Belgrade, Barcelona, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo), employees are expected to work onsite a minimum of 3 days per week to foster collaboration, team alignment, and access to in-office resources. Workplace type may vary based on location and team requirements. Please speak with your recruiter for details. Additional team-specific guidance and norms will be provided by your manager.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between USD $240,000 and USD $ 480,000 per year.
However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
