What is a Visual Basic developer?

Visual Basic developers are professionals who use the Visual Basic programming language to design, develop, and maintain software applications. Visual Basic is known for its simplicity and is often used for building Windows-based applications, automating tasks, and creating user-friendly interfaces. These developers work with businesses to automate processes, integrate systems, and solve complex problems using Visual Basic within environments like Microsoft Office or standalone applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Basic developer?

To thrive as a Visual Basic Developer, you need strong programming skills in Visual Basic (VB/VB.NET), a solid understanding of software development principles, and ideally a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio, SQL databases, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills ensure the development of reliable, maintainable applications and facilitate collaboration within development teams.

What are some common challenges Visual Basic developers face when maintaining legacy applications?

Visual Basic developers often encounter challenges such as outdated codebases, limited documentation, and compatibility issues with modern systems when maintaining legacy applications. Adapting legacy Visual Basic applications to integrate with newer technologies or operating systems can require careful refactoring and thorough testing. Additionally, developers may need to collaborate closely with end-users and stakeholders to ensure that updates do not disrupt critical business processes. Having a strong understanding of both the original code and current development best practices is essential for success in this role.

Is Visual Basic still a thing?

Visual Basic is still used in some legacy systems and for maintaining older applications, but it has largely been replaced by newer programming languages like C# and .NET frameworks. Many organizations are transitioning to modern development environments, though knowledge of Visual Basic can still be valuable for specific maintenance tasks.

  • Resolve escalated application development and production issues while identifying opportunities to prevent recurring problems
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and development practices that can improve engineering productivity, application performance, maintainability, and business outcomes
  • Establish a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and high team engagement

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise applications
  • 5+ years of experience leading software engineering or application development teams, including coaching, performance management, and employee development
  • Strong experience within the Microsoft/.NET technology ecosystem, including .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET, Blazor, C#, F#, and Visual Basic
  • Experience designing and developing applications using cloud services, preferably Microsoft Azure; experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform is also applicable
  • Strong experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, and source/version control
  • Experience developing and integrating Web APIs
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker
  • Strong database experience, including SQL-based platforms and modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake
  • Experience with enterprise development tools and environments such as Visual Studio and SQL Server

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams while maintaining sufficient technical depth to guide architecture, development practices, troubleshooting, and engineering decisions
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, business partners, and senior leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep experience with Microsoft Azure services, including cloud storage and related application/data services
  • Experience with Python
