LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE FINE ARTS/VISUAL ARTS TEACHER (7-12)
JOB DESCRIPTION

TOTAL COMPENSATION: Salary based on experience and education level per PCBOE salary schedule 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  2026-2027 School Year, 7:30-3:30 or as determined by Principal.

Position Purpose

The High School Art Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering a comprehensive visual arts program that promotes creativity, artistic expression, critical thinking, and appreciation of the arts. The teacher provides instruction aligned with West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards and supports students in developing artistic skills, cultural awareness, and lifelong engagement in the visual arts.

Qualifications

• Holds or is eligible for a valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate with appropriate Art endorsement.
• Must have or be eligible for a Long-Term Substitute Permit through the WVDE.
• Demonstrates knowledge of visual arts techniques, media, art history, and contemporary artistic practices.
• Possesses effective classroom management, communication, and instructional skills.
• Demonstrates the ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
• Meets all Pendleton County Schools' employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

• Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with West Virginia Content Standards and Objectives for Visual Art.
• Provide instruction in a variety of artistic media, techniques, and processes including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, printmaking, and mixed media.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.
• Incorporate art history, aesthetics, art criticism, and cultural connections into instructional activities.
• Utilize technology and digital tools to enhance student learning and artistic expression.
• Foster creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking through artistic experiences.

Student Learning and Assessment

• Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative assessment methods.
• Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance.
• Provide timely feedback to students and parents regarding academic progress.
• Analyze assessment data to guide instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
• Encourage student participation in exhibitions, competitions, and community art projects when appropriate.

Classroom Environment

• Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and engaging learning environment.
• Maintain art studios, classrooms, equipment, tools, and supplies in a safe and organized condition.
• Instruct students on the proper use and care of art materials and equipment.
• Ensure compliance with safety procedures related to art supplies, tools, and equipment.

Professional Responsibilities

• Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, counselors, and support staff to promote student success.
• Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, and other required meetings.
• Maintain professional competence through ongoing learning and professional growth opportunities.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and stakeholders regarding classroom activities and student progress.
• Support school improvement efforts and district initiatives.

School and Community Involvement

• Assist in organizing and displaying student artwork throughout the school and community.
• Promote appreciation of visual arts through school and community events.
• Participate in school-sponsored activities.
• Foster positive relationships with community organizations that support arts education.

Physical Demands

The employee must regularly stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, carry, and demonstrate artistic techniques. The employee may be required to lift and move instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, and the ability to observe student work and classroom activities.

Work Environment

The work environment includes classrooms, art studios, computer labs, and other school-related settings. The employee may be exposed to art materials, supplies, and equipment commonly associated with visual arts instruction.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education policies and Pendleton County Schools procedures governing professional personnel evaluations.
