Successful Vision Operators remain calm under pressure, ensuring seamless visual transitions and high-quality output despite any unexpected obstacles.

What is a Vision Operator?

A Vision Operator is a professional responsible for operating and monitoring machine vision systems, typically in manufacturing or industrial settings. They ensure that automated cameras and image processing equipment are functioning correctly to inspect products for quality control. Vision Operators adjust system settings, interpret visual data, and troubleshoot technical issues to maintain production standards. This role often requires attention to detail and familiarity with computer-based inspection tools. Their work helps ensure that products meet quality specifications and reduces the risk of defects reaching customers.

What is the difference between Vision Operator vs Optical Technician?

AspectVision OperatorOptical Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certificationHigh school diploma; certification or training often preferred
Work EnvironmentOptical stores, vision clinics, or manufacturing facilitiesOptical labs, manufacturing plants, or retail optical settings
Employer & IndustryOptical retailers, healthcare providers, manufacturing companiesOptical labs, eyewear manufacturers, retail optical stores

Both Vision Operators and Optical Technicians work in the optical industry, often in similar environments like optical stores or labs. However, Vision Operators typically focus on assisting customers with vision tests and operating vision equipment, while Optical Technicians are more involved in fabricating and repairing eyewear. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the optical field.

Avala AI is an AI Data Infrastructure company operating at the intersection of real-world AI and the labor economy. We specialize in high-quality data labeling, dataset management, and data visualization—offering 4D labeling solutions for autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots, and drone applications. Our mission is to empower AI-driven industries—AV companies, robotics innovators, and drone enterprises—with the data infrastructure needed to accelerate the next generation of intelligent systems, while also providing dignified digital work to individuals around the globe.

The Role

As a 3D Computer Vision Engineer at Avala AI, you will design and implement state-of-the-art solutions for offline and online 3D reconstruction and scene understanding that are robust, accurate, and performant. You'll work on a world-class spatial computing platform deployed at scale for autonomous vehicles, advanced robotic systems, and drone technologies. Your efforts will push the boundaries of real-world AI while leveraging modern deep learning and 3D computer vision techniques.

What You'll Do
  • Spatial Computing & Reconstruction: Develop cutting-edge solutions using NeRFs, Diffusion Models, Gaussian Splatting, Multiview Stereo, TSDF Fusion, Structure from Motion, and SLAM.

  • Mission-Critical Perception: Create robust 3D perception and scene understanding systems that enhance safety and performance for a wide range of robotics and AV applications.

  • 4D Data Labeling & Visualization: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine and scale Avala's 4D labeling platform for cars, humanoid robots, and drones.

  • Software Engineering Best Practices: Employ strong coding, testing, and deployment practices to develop novel work quickly, safely, and efficiently.

  • Boundary-Pushing Innovation: Continuously explore new methods and technologies that push the envelope in 3D vision, neural rendering, and large-scale data processing.

What You'll Bring
  • 3D Vision & Graphics Expertise: Experience with camera models, multi-view geometry, rendering pipelines, and one or more specialized areas such as object detection/tracking, pose estimation, depth estimation, panoptic segmentation, 3D reconstruction, visual SLAM, or neural rendering (e.g. NeRFs, Gaussian Splatting).

  • Solid Mathematical Fundamentals: Proficiency in linear algebra, computational geometry, vector calculus, probability theory, and numerical optimization.

  • Deep Learning Knowledge: Familiarity with modern architectures (transformers, diffusion models, autoregressive models, CNNs, etc.) and associated frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.).

  • Plus Skills: Experience with real-time graphics, sensor fusion, signal processing, computational photography, or robotics is a bonus.

  • Strong Engineering Foundations: Adherence to best practices in software development, ability to write clean and maintainable code, and a team-focused mindset for code reviews and collaboration.
