Employer & IndustryLarge corporations, IT service providers
Common Search & ComparisonFocus on virtualization infrastructure design and implementation

The Virtualization Architect specializes in designing and implementing virtualization solutions within enterprise environments, focusing on server and storage virtualization. A Cloud Engineer, on the other hand, primarily manages cloud-based infrastructure and services. While both roles require certifications like VMware or cloud platform credentials, the Virtualization Architect emphasizes on-premises virtualization architecture, whereas the Cloud Engineer focuses on cloud platforms like AWS or Azure. Understanding these differences helps organizations select the right professional for their virtualization and cloud needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtualization architect?

To thrive as a Virtualization Architect, you need in-depth knowledge of server, storage, and network virtualization concepts, commonly backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in tools and platforms such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix, and relevant certifications (e.g., VCP, MCSE) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you design scalable solutions and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the reliable and efficient deployment of virtualization infrastructure that supports organizational goals and business continuity.

What are some common challenges a virtualization architect faces when designing scalable solutions for enterprise environments?

A Virtualization Architect often encounters challenges such as balancing performance and resource allocation, ensuring compatibility across diverse hardware and software platforms, and maintaining robust security in multi-tenant environments. Meeting business requirements while optimizing costs can be complex, especially when integrating legacy systems with modern cloud or hybrid infrastructures. Effective collaboration with network, security, and application teams is essential to address these challenges and deliver scalable, resilient solutions.

Job description

Title: Senior Hybrid Cloud Engineer

Location: Katy, TX (Onsite, relocation assistance provided)

Duration: Direct Hire

Work Requirements: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Summary

We’re looking for a Senior Hybrid Cloud / Infrastructure Engineer to support a large-scale datacenter transformation from VMware to Nutanix. This is a hands-on, project-driven role (90% project work) focused on migrations, infrastructure modernization, and virtualization—not day-to-day support. The environment is already in motion with vendors involved, but the team needs someone internal to help execute, stabilize, and take ownership of the platform long-term.

Responsibilities

  • Support large-scale datacenter migration (VMware → Nutanix)
  • Execute VM migrations using Nutanix Move
  • Assist with re-IPing, validation, and system configuration updates
  • Administer Nutanix (AHV, Prism)
  • Maintain VMware (ESXi, vCenter) during transition
  • Support networking (VLANs, connectivity)
  • Work alongside vendors + internal teams on migration execution
  • Participate in architecture discussions (not just execution)
  • Provide limited L3 support (very minimal steady-state work)
  • Document migration processes and infrastructure changes

Qualifications

  • 5+ years infrastructure / datacenter engineering
  • Strong virtualization experience:
  • Nutanix (AHV, Prism)
  • VMware (ESXi, vCenter)
  • Experience with:
  • Datacenter migrations
  • Virtualization transitions
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Compute, storage, networking
  • Hypervisors
  • Nice to have:
  • Azure or GCP exposure
  • Nutanix Move or NC2
  • Automation (PowerShell, Python, Terraform)
  • Cisco UCS, NetApp, PureStorage
