What is a virtual social worker?

A Virtual Social Worker is a licensed professional who provides social work services remotely using digital platforms such as video calls, phone calls, or online messaging. They assist clients with a range of needs including mental health support, crisis intervention, case management, and connecting people to resources, all from a distance. Virtual Social Workers use secure and confidential technology to maintain client privacy while offering convenient access to support, especially for those who may have barriers to in-person visits.

What does a virtual social worker do?

A virtual social worker is a telecommuting worker who assists families, children, or others who have difficulty accessing social services. Your duties include helping people to find resources for housing, food, childcare, and other essentials. You also help clients access health care services they require. Other responsibilities include determining the needs of clients, advocating on their behalf, researching community resources that could help your clients, and aiding people with everyday problems. To thrive as a Virtual Social Worker, you need a degree in social work (BSW or MSW), state licensure, and a solid understanding of counseling techniques and case management. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure communication tools, and electronic case documentation systems is essential. Strong active listening, empathy, and digital communication skills help build trust and rapport with clients remotely. These skills ensure effective client support, adherence to ethical standards, and successful service delivery in a virtual environment.

Regular virtual meetings, secure messaging, and shared case management systems are used to coordinate care and ensure everyone is aligned on the client's needs.
