What is a virtual scribe?
What does a virtual scribe do?
As a virtual scribe, your primary responsibilities are to create medical notes that summarize patient encounters with a physician or nurse. In this role, you may document the encounter based on audio recordings, clarify medical directions or prescription authorizations with the doctor, submit paperwork electronically, prepare referral letters and similar documentation, and perform some administrative tasks. While scribes can work at computers in clinics, there are virtual positions where scribes work from home. Scribe work can be time-sensitive, so virtual scribes often write notes and prepare reports during regular business hours instead of working at a self-determined pace.

Job description
Brigham and Women's Primary Care is seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Physician to join our growing network of primary care practices throughout Eastern Massachusetts. At Brigham and Women's Primary Care, we believe exceptional primary care begins with strong physician-patient relationships. That's why we've intentionally designed a practice model that prioritizes quality over volume, reduces administrative burden, and provides the support physicians need to thrive both professionally and personally.
As part of the nation's leading academic health systems, physicians benefit from the resources and reputation of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Mass General Brigham while practicing in collaborative, community-based settings focused on delivering outstanding patient care. We have 14 practices throughout the Boston area and surrounding suburbs.
Why Physicians Choose Brigham and Women's Primary Care
We've invested in tools and support systems that allow physicians to focus on patient care.
- No call responsibilities. A dedicated after-hours APP call team manages all.
- AI-supported ambient scribe technology helps reduce documentation time.
- Dedicated virtual in-basket APP team supports and assists with message triage.
- Centralized teams manage prescription refill requests and prior authorizations.
Practice Primary Care the Way It Was Meant to Be
We prioritize quality over volume, giving physicians the time and support needed to provide exceptional care. With dedicated 30-minute visits, approximately 16 patients per day, and a thoughtfully structured three-year panel ramp-up, physicians can focus on continuity of care, meaningful patient relationships, and clinical excellence without the pressure of unrealistic productivity expectations.
Supported by a Team, Focused on Your Patients
Exceptional primary care is a team effort. Our interdisciplinary care model is designed to support physicians and enhance patient outcomes by addressing both medical and social needs. Working alongside Registered Nurses, Population Health Coordinators, Clinical Social Workers, Community Health Workers, and Resource Specialists, physicians can practice at the top of their license while knowing patients have access to the resources and support they need beyond the exam room. This collaborative approach helps reduce administrative burden, improve care coordination, and improve the patient experience.
Academic Medicine
For physicians who value teaching and professional growth, we offer the opportunity to remain actively engaged in academic medicine while building a rewarding clinical practice. Eligible physicians may pursue an optional Harvard Medical School academic appointment, teach medical students and, or residents. Through the expansive Mass General Brigham network, physicians also gain access to research opportunities, mentorship, and professional collaborations that support continued growth and advancement throughout their careers.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
- Active Massachusetts medical license or ability to obtain licensure, including MCSR and DEA
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and time management skills.
- Commitment to patient-centered, relationship-based care
Our compensation model combines a strong base salary with value-based incentive opportunities, rewarding meaningful patient outcomes and clinical excellence. In addition, physicians enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes a generous sign-on bonus for eligible candidates, dedicated CME time and funding, health and wellness benefits, tuition reimbursement, retirement savings programs, generous paid time off, and eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, helping support both your professional goals and personal well-being. We are committed to supporting physicians throughout every stage of their career. Through dedicated onboarding, mentorship, leadership development, and ongoing career advancement opportunities, we provide the foundation, resources, and professional connections needed to foster long-term growth, engagement, and success. As part of Mass General Brigham, physicians also gain access to a collaborative network of colleagues, experts, and resources that support continuous learning, professional fulfillment, and long-term success.
About Us — Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a founding member of Mass General Brigham and a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Appointment at Harvard Medical School—Depending upon the position, there may be opportunities to teach residents and medical students. All Harvard Medical School Faculty appointments require at least 50 hours of teaching per academic year. Harvard Medical School faculty appointment is not a requirement for this position. Academic rank as Instructor or Assistant Professor, full-time or part-time at Harvard Medical School, will be considered for applicants meeting teaching expectations and will be commensurate with experience, training, and achievements.
Commitment to Community — Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Department of Medicine are committed to ensuring our diverse community feels welcome, cared for, and valued. Candidates with experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and patients who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas.
Equal Opportunity Employer — We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
If you are committed to providing outstanding patient care and eager to contribute to our team-based approach to healthcare delivery. We invite you to apply to join Brigham and Women's Primary Care. Please contact Carolina Mallea, Sr. Physician Recruiter.
Total annual cash compensation for a Primary Care Physician generally ranges from $245,000 to $330,000 and includes base salary and eligible performance-based incentives.
