What is a Virtual Reality Developer?

A Virtual Reality Developer is a technology professional who designs, builds, and tests immersive applications and experiences using virtual reality (VR) technology. They use programming languages, 3D modeling tools, and game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine to create interactive environments for gaming, training, education, healthcare, and other industries. Their work involves both creative design and technical development, often collaborating with artists, designers, and other developers to bring virtual worlds to life.

What are some common challenges faced by Virtual Reality Developers when collaborating with designers and other team members?

Virtual Reality Developers often work closely with designers, artists, and UX specialists to bring immersive experiences to life. One common challenge is aligning technical constraints with creative vision, as not all design ideas are feasible within current VR hardware limitations. Effective communication and iterative prototyping are essential to bridge gaps between disciplines and ensure that both performance and user experience goals are met. Additionally, VR projects require rigorous testing across multiple devices, which can add complexity to collaboration and scheduling.

Are VR developers in demand?

VR developers are in high demand as virtual reality technology expands across industries such as gaming, healthcare, education, and training. Virtual Reality Developers can potentially earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, specialized skills in 3D programming, and proficiency with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine. Salaries vary based on location, industry, and level of expertise, with senior roles and those in high-demand markets more likely to reach or exceed this figure.

What does a virtual reality developer do?

A virtual reality developer designs and creates immersive 3D environments and experiences for VR headsets using programming languages like C# or C++ and development platforms such as Unity or Unreal Engine. They work on integrating graphics, sound, and user interactions, often collaborating with designers and engineers to build engaging virtual experiences. Strong coding skills, knowledge of 3D modeling, and understanding of VR hardware are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Reality Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Reality Developer, you need strong programming skills (C#, C++, or Java), 3D modeling understanding, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, and knowledge of VR hardware and SDKs, are typically required, along with certifications in VR development or related areas being advantageous. Job description

Who we are

We're The Beck Group, the largest and most innovative integrated building firm in the country. We are focused on delivering design and construction excellence on a broad range of project types. Headquartered in downtown Dallas, with offices in Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Worth, Mexico City, and Tampa, we believe a better process and outcome results from working together. At Beck, you will find yourself surrounded by passionate colleagues who have a collaborative mindset and care about each other. We are committed to hiring the best and brightest within our industry, and that's why we are seeking experienced professionals like you to help transform the industry and continue building Beck's respected reputation.

The Beck Group is seeking a Reality Capture Technician to join our Virtual Solutions team. This role will support 3D laser scanning, field documentation, point cloud processing, and construction-focused reality capture deliverables across Beck projects.

This is a production-focused reality capture position. The primary responsibility of this role is to perform 3D laser scanning using Leica reality capture equipment, with a strong preference for experience using the Leica RTC360. The ideal candidate understands field scanning workflows, scan coverage, site documentation, point cloud organization, and how reality capture data is used to support design and construction teams.

Experience with Revit is a major plus. When scanning workload allows, this role may also support Revit modeling, AutoCAD drafting, scan-to-BIM tasks, existing conditions documentation, and other Virtual Solutions deliverables.

The priority for this role is:

RTC360 / Reality Capture Production > Revit Support > Drone Experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform 3D laser scanning on active construction sites, existing buildings, renovation areas, and project sites.
  • Operate Leica RTC360 reality capture equipment.
  • Assist with scan planning, including scan locations, site access, coverage, overlap, safety considerations, and project scope requirements.
  • Capture clean, complete, and organized field data.
  • Maintain field notes, site photos, scan logs, and documentation needed to support registration and downstream use.
  • Support point cloud registration workflows using Leica Cyclone Register 360 / Register 360+ or similar software.
  • Prepare point cloud exports and deliverables for use in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and other project platforms.
  • Support scan-to-BIM and existing conditions modeling efforts.
  • Assist with Revit modeling and AutoCAD drafting when scanning workload allows.
  • Help project teams understand what was captured, what was not captured, and how the point cloud should be used.
  • Coordinate with Virtual Solutions, VDC teams, field teams, superintendents, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Maintain reality capture equipment, batteries, tripods, targets, storage devices, and field kits.
  • Travel to project sites as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D laser scanning, reality capture, surveying, construction documentation, or related field work.
  • Hands-on experience with Leica RTC360 or similar terrestrial laser scanning equipment.
  • Ability to work independently in the field with limited supervision.
  • Understanding of scan coverage, line of sight, overlap, field constraints, and basic scanning best practices.
  • Ability to work on active construction sites and follow site safety requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document field conditions clearly.
  • Ability to travel extensively.
  • Ability to read and understand basic construction drawings, floor plans, and field documentation.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Leica Cyclone Register 360 / Register 360+.
  • Experience with Leica P-Series scanners, including Leica P30, is a plus.
  • Revit experience is a major plus.
  • AutoCAD experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with point clouds in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, or Autodesk ReCap.
  • Scan-to-BIM or existing conditions modeling experience.
  • Familiarity with survey control, targets, spheres, registration workflows, shared coordinates, or state plane coordinates.
  • Experience with drones / UAS workflows is a plus, but not required.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 is a plus.
  • Construction, architecture, engineering, VDC, or survey background preferred.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, and comfortable working in the field. They understand that reality capture is more than setting up a scanner and pressing a button. Good scan data requires planning, coverage, documentation, and an understanding of how the information will be used later.

This person should be comfortable traveling, working on construction sites, learning Beck's internal workflows, and supporting project teams with accurate field data. They do not need to be a senior VDC expert, but they should be curious, coachable, technically capable, and willing to grow into a strong reality capture production resource.

Success in This Role

Success in this role means:

  • Scan data is captured correctly the first time.
  • Project teams receive organized, usable point cloud deliverables.
  • Field notes and scan documentation are clear and complete.
  • Registration issues are minimized through strong field execution.
  • Equipment is maintained and ready for use.
  • Reality capture workflows are followed consistently.
  • The employee grows into a self-sufficient resource for RTC360 scanning, point cloud support, and basic Revit/AutoCAD production support.
