Registered Nurse (RN) – Plastic Surgery Operating Room Job Description

An Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) specializing in Plastic Surgery provides direct patient care before, during, and after cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures. The OR RN works closely with plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and clinical staff to ensure patient safety, comfort, and successful surgical outcomes in both hospital and outpatient surgical settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms, surgical instruments, implants, and specialized cosmetic surgery equipment for procedures
  • Assist with cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries including facelifts, liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, rhinoplasty, skin grafts, and reconstructive procedures
  • Conduct pre-operative patient assessments and review medical histories, medications, allergies, and consent forms
  • Educate patients on surgical preparation, post-operative expectations, and recovery instructions
  • Maintain sterile techniques and strict infection control standards throughout procedures
  • Monitor patients’ conditions before, during, and after surgery
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and treatments as ordered by physicians
  • Serve as a circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse during surgical procedures
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and assist the surgical team during operations
  • Accurately document patient care, surgical procedures, supplies, implants, and outcomes
  • Monitor post-operative recovery and assist with discharge planning
  • Ensure patient privacy, emotional support, and a high level of customer service throughout the surgical experience
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, AAAASF, JCAHO, and facility safety standards

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of Operating Room nursing experience required
  • Previous plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, or outpatient surgical experience strongly preferred
  • Experience circulating and/or scrubbing in surgical procedures preferred
