Job description

Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in the IMC/Stepdown/PCU setting is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients requiring telemetry, neuro stepdown, and intermediate care. This role involves advanced cardiac monitoring, emergency response, medication administration, and specialized care across multiple clinical areas including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, neurological, orthopedic, plastic surgery, and respiratory systems. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to deliver patient-centered care in a fast-paced acute care environment, ensuring adherence to protocols and maintaining patient safety.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform continuous cardiac monitoring and interpret dysrhythmias on telemetry units.
  • Manage and respond to emergency situations using rapid response teams.
  • Provide post-procedural care including post cardiac angiogram, cardiac catheterization, and surgery.
  • Administer and manage IV therapies including arterial lines, central lines, blood products, and PCA.
  • Care for patients with feeding tubes, tracheostomies, ventilators, chest tubes, and respiratory support devices.
  • Manage neurological and psychiatric cases such as craniotomy, CVA, neurosurgery, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Provide orthopedic and plastic surgery care including wound care, skin grafts, and surgical drains.
  • Administer medications including heparin protocols, cardiac and vasoactive drips, and procedural sedation.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for treatment planning and patient education.
  • Document patient care accurately using Cerner electronic medical record system.
  • Adhere to isolation precautions and wound care protocols including wound vac management.
  • Float within scope to meet facility needs as required.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in telemetry, neuro stepdown, PCU, DOU, or IMC/Stepdown units.
  • BLS and NIH certifications required.
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills including dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
  • Experience with vascular access devices, IV therapy, and medication administration protocols.
  • Strong clinical skills in managing complex cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, orthopedic, and plastic surgery patients.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • Experience with Cerner electronic health records.
  • Teaching hospital experience.
  • Experience in a Level I trauma center.
Special Considerations:
  • Work setting includes telemetry, neuro stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units.
  • No on-call requirement.
  • Floating within scope of practice to other units as needed.
  • RTO restrictions ideally no more than 5 days.
  • Must have an active Illinois RN license prior to hire; pending licenses not accepted.
Scheduling:
  • Three 12-hour day shifts per week, typically from 06:45 to 19:15.
  • Work every other weekend.
  • Block schedule accommodations may be discussed with management.
  • Guaranteed hours with potential for client call-offs up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment.
