What does a virtual paralegal do?

The job of a virtual paralegal is to assist a lawyer or legal team. Their duties are to perform research, communicate with clients, prepare and check documents, and draft legal documents and correspondences. Since a virtual paralegal works from a remote location, their responsibilities may include meeting with clients and lawyers via phone or computer. A virtual paralegal may exclusively telecommute every day or attend occasional hearings or meetings in person. The educational qualifications you need to start a career as a virtual paralegal vary.

What is a virtual paralegal?

A virtual paralegal is a trained legal professional who provides paralegal services remotely, often working from a home office or another off-site location. They assist attorneys and law firms with tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, managing case files, and client communication, all via digital tools and secure online platforms. Virtual paralegals offer flexibility and cost savings to legal practices by allowing firms to outsource tasks without the need for in-house staff. Their responsibilities are similar to those of traditional paralegals, but all work is conducted virtually.

What is the job of a virtual paralegal?

As a virtual paralegal, your responsibilities are to provide legal services to a law firm through an online platform or communication system. In this role, you may prepare documents for an attorney, help a lawyer research specific topics, or file forms with government agencies. Many virtual paralegals specialize in particular areas of law, such as bankruptcy proceedings or immigration cases, but it is also possible to get work as a general paralegal. Most virtual paralegals work from home, and you may have the ability to set your own hours or even work for multiple clients, depending on the position. Virtual paralegals often work with time-sensitive tasks, so the ability to prioritize jobs and adjust your schedule as needed is essential to success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal procedures, document preparation, and research skills, often supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with legal management software, e-filing systems, and secure document sharing platforms is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective written communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure accuracy, efficiency, and reliable remote support to attorneys and clients in a digital legal environment.

How does a virtual paralegal collaborate effectively with attorneys and legal teams remotely?

Virtual paralegals often use secure communication tools, project management software, and cloud-based document systems to stay connected with attorneys and legal teams. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help ensure that tasks are completed accurately and on time. Establishing strong communication habits and being proactive in providing updates or asking clarifying questions are key to maintaining smooth workflow and trust, even when working from different locations.

Job description

About the Opportunity
Equivity is seeking an experienced Remote Paralegal with recent law firm experience supporting at least two of the following practice areas: civil litigation, personal injury, employment law, criminal law, commercial litigation, or family law.

This is an assignment-based opportunity designed for paralegals who value the flexibility of remote work and enjoy supporting a variety of law firms and matters across the country. As client needs evolve, assignments and workload may vary based on business demand. This role is a good fit for an experienced paralegal who values professional flexibility and is comfortable with a workload that can fluctuate rather than requiring a guaranteed number of weekly hours from the outset.

When actively supporting clients, responsiveness is important. Because client needs can arise on short notice, paralegals are expected to remain responsive to their active clients and Equivity managers within one hour during their stated availability.

If you're an experienced paralegal who appreciates autonomy, remote flexibility, and the opportunity to work with multiple legal teams, this assignment-based model may be a strong fit.

Responsibilities May Include
  • Managing matters from intake through resolution
  • Drafting pleadings, correspondence, discovery, and other legal documents
  • Preparing and submitting state and federal court filings
  • Supporting discovery, document production, legal research, and trial preparation
  • Maintaining case calendars and tracking court, discovery, and client deadlines
  • Scheduling hearings, depositions, mediations, meetings, and trials
  • Communicating professionally with clients, courts, opposing counsel, vendors, and other legal professionals
  • Monitoring case progress and anticipating attorney needs
  • Adapting to different attorney workflows, practice areas, and case-management systems

We Are Looking For
  • Must reside in the United States
  • At least three years of recent law firm paralegal experience
  • Substantive experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Civil litigation
    • Personal injury
    • Employment law
    • Criminal law
    • Commercial litigation
    • Family law
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 20 hours of weekly availability for potential assignments
  • Strong legal writing, organization, communication, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities remotely
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and legal software
  • Experience with Clio is preferred
  • Access to a reliable computer and internet connection; a Windows-based computer is preferred
  • Ability to respond within one hour during stated availability

Compensation and Work Structure
  • W-2 employment
  • Compensation: $26 per hour
  • Remote, assignment-based work
  • Assignments are determined by client demand, experience, qualifications, and availability
  • Assignment volume and working hours may vary
  • Client assignments may take time to develop and are not guaranteed immediately upon joining
  • Benefits eligibility may depend on employment status and applicable plan requirements

Why Join Equivity?
At Equivity, you will join a nationwide team of experienced legal professionals supporting attorneys and law firms across the country. You will receive ongoing support from Equivity’s operations and leadership teams while performing substantive legal work in your areas of experience.

Benefits
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid sick time
  • Annual performance bonus
  • 6-month performance review with potential pay increase
  • Expense reimbursement
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Supportive long-term remote work environment
