A virtual paralegal may exclusively telecommute every day or attend occasional hearings or meetings in person. The educational qualifications you need to start a career as a virtual paralegal vary.

What is a virtual paralegal?

A virtual paralegal is a trained legal professional who provides paralegal services remotely, often working from a home office or another off-site location. They assist attorneys and law firms with tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, managing case files, and client communication, all via digital tools and secure online platforms. Virtual paralegals offer flexibility and cost savings to legal practices by allowing firms to outsource tasks without the need for in-house staff. Their responsibilities are similar to those of traditional paralegals, but all work is conducted virtually.

What is the job of a virtual paralegal?

As a virtual paralegal, your responsibilities are to provide legal services to a law firm through an online platform or communication system. In this role, you may prepare documents for an attorney, help a lawyer research specific topics, or file forms with government agencies. Many virtual paralegals specialize in particular areas of law, such as bankruptcy proceedings or immigration cases, but it is also possible to get work as a general paralegal. Most virtual paralegals work from home, and you may have the ability to set your own hours or even work for multiple clients, depending on the position. Job description

About the Opportunity
Equivity is seeking an experienced Paralegal with experience in Family Law (working with California-based law firms) to remotely support attorneys handling divorce, legal separation, paternity, child custody and support, domestic violence restraining orders, property division, and post-judgment matters.
This is an assignment-based opportunity designed for paralegals who value the flexibility of remote work and enjoy supporting a variety of law firms and matters across the country. As client needs evolve, assignments and workload may vary based on business demand. This role is a good fit for an experienced paralegal who values professional flexibility and is comfortable with a workload that can fluctuate rather than requiring a guaranteed number of weekly hours from the outset.
When actively supporting clients, responsiveness is important. Because client needs can arise on short notice, paralegals are expected to remain responsive to their active clients and Equivity managers within one hour during their stated availability.
If you're an experienced litigation paralegal who appreciates autonomy, remote flexibility, and the opportunity to work with multiple legal teams, this assignment-based model may be a strong fit.
What You’ll Do:
  • Manage family law cases from intake through resolution, including discovery, mediation, and trial preparation.
  • Maintain organized electronic case files and ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Draft, edit, and file pleadings, motions, subpoenas, and financial affidavits in compliance with California Family Law Rules of Procedure and local court requirements.
  • Coordinate e-filings through the California Courts E-Filing Portal and maintain accurate proof of service and filing records.
  • Prepare and respond to discovery requests, compile and analyze financial disclosures, and assist with preparation of equitable distribution schedules.
  • Maintain professional and responsive communication with clients, providing updates, gathering information, and ensuring they understand each stage of the case.
  • Coordinate with court personnel, opposing counsel, mediators, and experts to facilitate hearings, mediation, and scheduling.
  • Prepare exhibits, witness lists, trial binders, and related materials; assist attorneys during mediation and trial as needed.
  • Manage calendars, track deadlines, and ensure case files and correspondence are accurately maintained.
About You:
  • 3+ years of California family law experience
  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Minimum availability of 20 hours/week to start
  • Strong knowledge of California court rules and e-filing
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple cases
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skill
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe
  • Experience with legal software (Clio or similar is a plus)
  • Windows-based computer preferred
  • Availability and responsiveness within 1 hour during standard business hours (9:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
Why You’ll Love Working Here
At Equivity, you are part of a dedicated, internally managed team of legal professionals—not a temporary placement. We provide ongoing work with established attorneys while maintaining the flexibility of remote work. You’ll be supported by an experienced operations team and work in a collaborative, professional environment that values quality and long-term relationships.
Compensation and Work Structure
  • W-2 employment
  • Compensation: $30 per hour
  • Assignment-based work with client assignments determined by demand, qualifications, and availability
  • Assignment volume and hours may vary
  • Client assignments may take time to develop and are not guaranteed immediately upon joining
Benefits:
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid sick time
  • Employee discounts
  • Annual performance bonuses
  • Six-month pay reviews with potential hourly increases based on performance
  • Reimbursement of certain business expenses
  • Professional development and advancement opportunities
About Equivity
