What is a virtual occupational therapist?

A Virtual Occupational Therapist is a licensed healthcare professional who provides occupational therapy services remotely using video calls, online platforms, or other telehealth technologies. They assess and help clients improve their ability to perform daily activities, such as self-care, work, or school tasks, without meeting in person. Virtual Occupational Therapists can work with children, adults, or seniors and tailor interventions to each individual's needs, offering guidance, exercises, and strategies online. This approach increases accessibility for clients who may have mobility challenges or difficulty traveling to appointments.

What does a virtual occupational therapist do?

The job duties of a virtual occupational therapist (OT) involve providing teletherapy services online to people recovering from injury or illness or those with physical or developmental disabilities. As a virtual OT, you often use a phone as well as video conference software to evaluate a patient’s unique needs. After your assessment, you make a plan for rehabilitation using occupational therapy strategies and activities. Your responsibilities include directing clients to perform therapeutic activities and tasks. You communicate with them online to assess their progress and ensure that their therapy plan is effective by making adjustments as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual occupational therapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Occupational Therapist, you need a solid background in occupational therapy, a relevant degree, and state licensure or certification. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, digital assessment tools, and secure communication software is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help you engage clients and collaborate effectively in a remote environment. These skills ensure high-quality, accessible care and successful patient outcomes in a virtual setting.

How does a virtual occupational therapist effectively collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support patient progress?

As a virtual occupational therapist, collaboration with other healthcare providers—such as physicians, physical therapists, and case managers—typically occurs through secure digital communication platforms. You may attend interdisciplinary team meetings via video calls and share progress notes or care plans electronically to ensure coordinated care. Building strong communication skills and maintaining clear, timely documentation are essential for keeping the wider care team informed and aligned on each patient’s goals. This collaborative approach helps ensure patients receive comprehensive, holistic support, even when services are delivered remotely.

Both Virtual Occupational Therapists and Virtual Speech-Language Pathologists provide remote therapy services, often through telehealth platforms.
