At the present time, a vacancy exists for a Secondary Special Education Teacher within the Brandywine Virtual Academy division of the Chester County Intermediate Unit for the 2026-2027 school year with Philadelphia Virtual Academy. This position will be located in person at the Educational Service Center in Downingtown, PA and the Rivera Building in Philadelphia, PA and offers the potential for 2 days a week work from home.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education required
  • Valid PA Special Education Certificate (N-12) required
  • Experience teaching math or ELA preferred
  • Experience with Elementary students preferred
  • Experience working with special education students preferred
  • Experience with online/virtual teaching environments preferred
  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles preferred
  • Familiarity with National Standards for Quality (NSQ) Online Teaching and Learning preferred
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS) and digital education tools required
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt curriculum for online delivery required
  • Current police, child abuse & FBI fingerprint clearances required
  • Clearance as an MA provider by the Commonwealth of PA and federal government (conducted by CCIU upon hire)

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Instruct individuals and groups in special education skill and subject areas
  • Plan curriculum, lessons, and special education programs and teaching methods
  • Evaluate and monitor student progress based on classroom performance, test scores, and observation of behavior
  • Support objectives and interventions of the educational program
  • Maintain safe virtual environment of the classroom
  • Maintain contact with parents of students and/or professionals concerning student progress
  • When appropriate, develop IEPs addressing specific academic, behavioral, and speech needs of students
  • Prepare report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other documentation as required
  • Function as integral member of treatment/IEP team, addressing needs of students
  • Design and deliver engaging virtual instruction that adheres to NSQ Online Teaching standards
  • Implement UDL principles to create accessible online learning experiences for all students
  • Customize digital learning environments to meet individual student needs as outlined in IEPs
  • Effectively navigate and utilize various digital platforms, tools, and resources to enhance student learning
  • Monitor and assess student engagement and progress in virtual learning environments
  • Troubleshoot basic technical issues and provide appropriate support to students in the online setting
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and share best practices for online special education
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies and pedagogical approaches in virtual education
  • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive online classroom community that promotes student success

Schedule: 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day. 194 days per year for new professional employees/191 days for professional staff in year two/190 days in all subsequent years.
Salary 2026-2027 School Year:
  • $59,796 to $87,342 - E/I (Emergency Certification)
  • $62,155 to $89,730 - Instructional I Certification
  • $64,834 to $93,324 - Instructional II Certification
  • $69,353 to $101,911 - Master's Degree
  • $72,740 to $105,924 - Master's + 15 Credits
  • $74,415 to $107,845- Master's + 30 Credits
