What is a virtual hospitalist?

A Virtual Hospitalist is a physician who provides remote inpatient care using telemedicine technology. They collaborate with on-site medical teams to evaluate patients, manage treatments, and make clinical decisions. Virtual hospitalists typically work from a remote location, using video conferencing and electronic health records to monitor patients. This model helps hospitals extend coverage, improve patient care, and address physician shortages while maintaining real-time communication with bedside staff.

What does a virtual hospitalist do?

As a Virtual Hospitalist, your day typically involves conducting remote patient rounds, reviewing charts, ordering tests, and providing treatment recommendations through telehealth technology. You regularly communicate with on-site nurses, allied health professionals, and consulting physicians to stay updated on patient conditions and to coordinate care. Virtual Hospitalists also participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, respond to urgent clinical consults, and document all interventions in the hospital’s EHR system. This role requires strong collaboration and clear communication skills to ensure seamless patient care, despite working off-site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual hospitalist?

To thrive as a Virtual Hospitalist, you need board certification in internal or family medicine, strong clinical decision-making skills, and licensure to practice medicine in relevant states. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication tools is vital for remote patient management. Exceptional communication, time management, and multitasking abilities help stand out in coordinating care virtually. These competencies are crucial for delivering safe, timely, and effective inpatient care from a remote location while collaborating with on-site clinical teams.
