What are some common challenges faced by teachers working in a Virtual High School environment, and how can they be overcome?

Teachers in a Virtual High School often face challenges such as maintaining student engagement, ensuring clear communication, and managing diverse learning paces. To overcome these, successful educators use interactive digital tools, set clear expectations, and provide regular feedback. Building strong online relationships and fostering a sense of community among students also play a crucial role in creating an effective learning environment. Regular professional development and collaboration with colleagues can further support teachers in adapting to the unique demands of virtual education.

What is a virtual high school?

A virtual high school is an accredited educational institution that delivers high school courses and instruction primarily online rather than in a traditional classroom setting. Students can access coursework, submit assignments, and communicate with teachers and classmates over the internet, offering flexibility in terms of location and often scheduling. Virtual high schools may serve a wide range of students, including those seeking alternative learning environments, those with scheduling conflicts, or students who need to supplement their education. These schools are typically overseen by certified teachers and follow state or national education standards. Graduates from accredited virtual high schools receive a high school diploma, just like those from traditional schools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual High School Teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual High School Teacher, you need a teaching certification in your subject area, strong instructional skills, and a solid understanding of online pedagogy. Familiarity with learning management systems (such as Canvas or Google Classroom), video conferencing tools, and digital assessment platforms is essential. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and adaptability help you engage students and manage remote classrooms effectively. These skills ensure students receive high-quality education and support in a virtual environment, fostering academic success and engagement.

Job description

About Founders Classical Academy Online

Founders Classical Academy Online (FCA Online) is part of the Founders Classical Academies network within the ResponsiveEd family of schools. Guided by the motto Scientia, Virtus, et Libertas ("Knowledge, Virtue, and Liberty"), FCA Online provides a rigorous classical education rooted in the liberal arts and sciences. Our mission is to cultivate wisdom and virtue in students through the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness within a distinctly classical and character-forming environment.

Through the study of great literature, disciplined inquiry, and thoughtful discussion, FCA Online prepares students to think clearly, speak eloquently, and engage thoughtfully with the intellectual heritage of Western civilization.

Please note – while this is an online school position and all instruction occurs virtually, travel and face to face attendance will be required several times per year to support in person state testing and student events.

Eligibility: Open to residents of Texas

Position Summary

The English Teacher will lead students in the study of literature, grammar, composition, and rhetoric within the classical tradition. Instruction emphasizes close reading, careful textual analysis, and thoughtful writing grounded in significant works of the Western literary tradition.

Students encounter texts that develop moral imagination, intellectual depth, and eloquent expression. The teacher guides students in developing strong reading habits, analytical thinking, and clear written communication while cultivating a classroom culture that values attentiveness, discussion, and intellectual virtue.

This position requires delivering rigorous classical instruction in an engaging virtual environment while maintaining strong relationships with students and families.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver rigorous English instruction aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
  • Lead students in the close reading and analysis of literary works and historical texts
  • Teach grammar, composition, and rhetoric through structured writing instruction
  • Facilitate thoughtful discussion and textual analysis through Socratic dialogue
  • Provide detailed feedback on student writing to support the development of clear and persuasive expression
  • Assess student progress through essays, exams, projects, and other assessments
  • Maintain strong communication with students and families in a virtual environment
  • Participate in faculty collaboration, curriculum development, and professional development aligned with the Founders mission
  • Use technology in ways that support learning while preserving the text-centered nature of classical literary study
QualificationsRequired
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, Humanities, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of classical and Western literary traditions
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate meaningful literary discussion
  • Ability to teach effectively within a virtual instructional model
Preferred
  • Texas Teaching Certification (ELAR 4–8 or 7–12)
  • Master's degree in English, Literature, or Liberal Arts
  • Experience teaching classical literature
  • Experience with Socratic discussion and classical pedagogy
  • Experience with online learning platforms
