City of Independence, Iowa | Parks and Recreation Department

The City of Independence is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our Parks & Recreation team as a Front Desk Receptionist. This position serves as the first point of contact for visitors at the Recreation Center and provides essential customer service and administrative support to ensure smooth daily operations.

Position Overview

  • Department: Parks and Recreation
  • Reports To: P&R Assistant Director-Recreation & Aquatic & Parks & Recreation Director
  • Status: Seasonal/Part Time
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Role

As a Front Desk Receptionist, you will greet visitors, answer phones, process memberships and payments, and assist with program registrations. You will also enforce facility rules, handle cash transactions accurately, and perform light cleaning duties. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answer phones and route calls; respond to routine inquiries about department operations.
  • Act as the first point of contact for visitors; provide information or direct them to appropriate personnel.
  • Accept and process membership applications, program registrations, and payments.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations regarding public health and safety.
  • Collect and record payments for admissions, pool passes, and rentals; maintain accurate cash handling procedures.
  • Assist in emergency situations calmly and appropriately as part of the facility’s emergency action plan.
  • Perform cleaning duties for floors, counters, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Attend required in-service training sessions.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Strong customer service and communication skills.
    • Ability to perform basic math and handle cash accurately.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with children and adults preferred.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.; occasional bending, stooping, and standing.
  • Work Style: Courteous, reliable, and able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Work Environment
