What is a virtual enrolled agent?

A Virtual Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally-authorized tax practitioner who represents taxpayers before the IRS, specializing in tax preparation, tax planning, and resolving tax issues. Unlike traditional EAs, virtual EAs provide these services remotely, using secure digital communication tools and online platforms. They are licensed by the IRS and must pass a comprehensive exam and meet continuing education requirements. Virtual EAs are equipped to handle both individual and business tax matters, offering convenience and flexibility for clients across different locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual enrolled agent?

To thrive as a Virtual Enrolled Agent, you need strong tax knowledge, analytical skills, and current Enrolled Agent (EA) certification from the IRS. Familiarity with tax preparation software (such as Drake, Lacerte, or ProSeries), secure file-sharing tools, and virtual communication platforms is essential. Excellent client communication, attention to detail, and time management are standout soft skills in this remote role. These competencies ensure accurate tax representation, client trust, and efficient service delivery in a virtual environment.

How does a virtual enrolled agent effectively manage communication and workflow with remote clients and team members?

As a Virtual Enrolled Agent, clear and organized communication is essential since most interactions with clients and colleagues occur online or by phone. You'll typically use secure portals, email, and video conferencing to share sensitive tax documents, provide updates, and answer client questions. Managing multiple clients remotely requires strong time management and the ability to prioritize tasks, as well as familiarity with cloud-based tax software. Regular check-ins with other tax professionals or supervisors help ensure accuracy and compliance, while collaborative tools like shared calendars and project management platforms keep everyone aligned.

What is the difference between Virtual Enrolled Agent vs Virtual CPA?

AspectVirtual Enrolled AgentVirtual CPA
CertificationsEnrolled Agent (EA) license from IRSCertified Public Accountant (CPA) license from state boards
Work EnvironmentTax resolution, IRS representation, tax preparationBroader accounting services, auditing, financial planning
Industry UsageTax-focused firms, IRS representationAccounting firms, corporate finance, consulting
Common Search IntentTax services, IRS representationAccounting, auditing, financial consulting

While both Virtual Enrolled Agents and Virtual CPAs are licensed professionals in the finance industry, EAs primarily focus on tax resolution and IRS representation, whereas CPAs offer a broader range of accounting and financial services. The choice depends on your specific needs—tax-related issues or comprehensive financial management.

If you're passionate about helping people understand their health insurance options, confident in your ability to guide a sales conversation, and enjoy working from home, we'd love to hear from you.

As a Licensed Health Insurance Agent, you'll provide consultative sales support to customers exploring health insurance options. We have opportunities available supporting both Medicare and Under 65 health plans, with agents assigned to a program based on business needs, licensing, and experience. You'll use your insurance knowledge, sales experience, and ability to connect with people to understand each customer's needs, explain available options, and guide them toward the plan that works best for them.

This is a seasonal, fully remote opportunity. Schedules, pay rates, program details, and assignment length may vary based on business and client needs.

What You Will Be Doing

You'll help customers navigate important healthcare decisions by making the insurance process easier to understand. Whether you're answering questions, explaining plan benefits, identifying additional needs, or helping a customer complete an enrollment, you'll have the opportunity to create a positive experience with every interaction.

As a Licensed Health Insurance Agent, on a typical day, you'll:

  • Answer inbound calls from customers exploring health insurance options
  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments using active listening and consultative sales techniques
  • Educate customers on available health plans, benefits, products, and services
  • Recommend solutions based on each customer's individual healthcare and coverage needs
  • Confidently guide conversations toward a successful enrollment
  • Complete health plan enrollments while meeting applicable sales and performance expectations
  • Identify additional customer needs and available solutions when appropriate
  • Build trust with members and prospective customers through clear, compassionate communication
  • Navigate multiple systems while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and compliance
  • Protect customer information and follow all applicable privacy, security, and HIPAA requirements
  • Represent BroadPath, a Sagility Company, and our client partners with professionalism and care

  • Active resident Health Insurance Producer License
  • Ability to obtain reciprocal state health insurance licenses when required for your assigned program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1+ years of experience as a Licensed Health Insurance Agent in a Telesales environment
  • Strong consultative sales and customer service skills
  • Confidence assuming the sale and guiding customers through the enrollment process
  • Strong active listening, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to balance customer needs with sales and performance expectations
  • Strong computer navigation skills and the ability to work efficiently across multiple systems
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working productively in a remote environment
