What is a virtual database administrator?

A Virtual Database Administrator (VDBA) is an IT professional who manages and maintains databases remotely, rather than being physically present at the organization's location. VDBAs handle tasks such as database installation, configuration, performance tuning, backup, security, and troubleshooting through remote tools and secure connections. This role allows organizations to access specialized database expertise without the need for an on-site employee, often leading to cost savings and flexible support. Virtual DBAs are commonly employed by managed service providers or work as independent contractors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual database administrator?

To thrive as a Virtual Database Administrator, you need a strong background in database management, SQL proficiency, and experience with cloud-based platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, AWS RDS, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional are highly valuable. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective remote communication are essential soft skills for success in this remote role. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and efficient database operations, supporting business continuity and data-driven decision-making in distributed environments.

How does a virtual database administrator typically collaborate with remote development and IT teams?

As a Virtual Database Administrator, collaboration with remote development and IT teams is often done through regular video meetings, project management tools, and shared documentation platforms. You will frequently coordinate with developers to optimize queries, support deployments, and troubleshoot database issues. Clear and proactive communication is essential, as you'll need to ensure that database updates and maintenance align with the broader team's project timelines. This remote structure allows for flexible work arrangements but also requires strong self-management and organizational skills.

Job description

Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
  • 2 years of experience with GenAI techniques (e.g., LLMs, Multi-Modal, Large Vision Models) or with GenAI-related concepts (language modeling, computer vision).
Preferred qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience building large-scale distributed databases, data warehouses, lakehouses and similar architectures.
  • 5 years of experience with Information Security, Governance and Compliance for enterprise cloud services.
About the job:

Agentic Experiences drive AI innovation across the stack. We design dynamic, autonomous workflows, first-party (1P) agents, and user experiences that proactively solve complex problems for our customers with an agent-first mindset. For database teams looking to scale operations and eliminate mundane management tasks for the agentic era, Virtual DBA provides persistent, autonomous AI agents that operate in the background to manage database fleets at scale. In contrast, traditional database management is manual, reactive, and fragmented even when AI is used. It forces database administrators (DBAs) into constant issue resolution, semi-automated telemetry correlation across disparate tools, and rigid, script or prompt-based maintenance that fails to scale with modern enterprise footprints. Virtual DBA is a fully autonomous, life-cycle-aware database management framework. By allowing customers to define operational policies in natural language and Day 0 to Day 2 operations to AI, Virtual DBA scales human expertise without requiring more resources, ensuring database fleets run optimal, secure workloads automatically.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

  • Partner with architects to guide the implementation of secure, production-grade agentic infrastructure, including multi-agent parallel execution, adaptive cognitive learning loops, and persistent background agents across Google Cloud databases.
  • Oversee the delivery of developer and user tools, ensuring backend autonomous agent states are visualized in the Command Center, alongside the development of VS Code extensions, Agent Registries, and Skills Registries.
