What is a virtual business analyst?

A Virtual Business Analyst is a professional who analyzes business processes, requirements, and data remotely, often using digital tools and communication platforms. They work with stakeholders to identify business needs, recommend solutions, and help organizations improve efficiency and achieve their goals. Virtual Business Analysts perform similar tasks to traditional business analysts but do so from a remote location, making them valuable for organizations with distributed teams or a need for flexible staffing.

How does a virtual business analyst typically collaborate with remote stakeholders and project teams?

As a Virtual Business Analyst, much of your collaboration with stakeholders and project teams occurs through digital communication tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and collaborative project management platforms. You will regularly facilitate virtual meetings to gather requirements, clarify objectives, and provide project updates. Building strong relationships remotely requires clear communication, proactive follow-ups, and thorough documentation. Adapting to different time zones and ensuring alignment among distributed team members are common challenges, but effective use of technology and strong organizational skills can help you succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual business analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Business Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, business process knowledge, and typically a degree in business, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, Tableau, or SQL), business intelligence platforms, and project management systems is common, and certifications such as CBAP or PMI-PBA are advantageous. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and self-management skills set top performers apart, especially when collaborating remotely. These skills and qualities ensure effective requirements gathering, data-driven decision-making, and seamless project delivery in virtual work environments.

Can you work remotely as a virtual business analyst?

Yes, virtual business analysts often work remotely, utilizing tools like spreadsheets, data analysis software, and communication platforms. Many organizations offer remote or hybrid arrangements for this role, which typically requires strong analytical skills and familiarity with business intelligence tools.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with business groups to inventory systems, tools, and data usage patterns tied to physical device storage

  • Assess and classify data sensitivity and identify critical systems and high-risk data storage practices for migration to VDI

  • Develop recommendations and a business case for VDI migration, including risk, cost, and adoption considerations

Job description

Business Analyst โ€“ Data Sensitivity & VDI Migration

Contract length: 9 months plus

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Business Analyst with expertise working in complex, multi-platform environments to assess data classification and usage across business groups org-wide, identify the most critical systems, and develop business recommendations to support College Board's evolving secure data storage, access and use strategy. This includes evaluating the full range of viable solutions โ€” such as VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), enhanced access controls, or other secure data management approaches โ€” and recommending the option(s) best suited to each use case.

This individual will partner with stakeholders across the organization to understand how different groups use systems, where data currently lives, and what risks that creates. They will translate that analysis into clear, actionable recommendations โ€” including a supporting business case โ€” that inform how client reduces reliance on physical device storage and which solution(s) best address the associated risks for each business group.

In this role, you will:

  • Partner with business groups org-wide to inventory the systems, tools, and data usage patterns tied to physical device storage
  • Assess and classify data sensitivity across groups, systems, and workflows
  • Identify the most critical systems and highest-risk data storage practices that should be prioritized for migration to VDI
  • Document current-state and proposed future-state data storage and usage models
  • Develop recommendations and a supporting business case for VDI migration, including risk, cost, and adoption considerations
  • Collaborate with Security, Technology and Business teams to validate findings and align recommendations with CB data policies
  • Analyze and document data and process flow across systems, servers, networks, and endpoints to support risk assessment and migration planning
  • Evaluate and help design privileged access management (PAM) processes and frameworks as part of broader data security recommendations
  • Support development of auditing and compliance review processes related to data usage, access controls, and end-to-end data security

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum 5โ€“7 years of professional experience as a Business Analyst, including experience with data governance, data classification/sensitivity assessments, or IT infrastructure/endpoint-related initiatives
  • Experience analyzing systems usage and data flows across multiple business units or departments
  • Familiarity with VDI concepts and platforms (e.g., Citrix, VMware Horizon, Azure Virtual Desktop), or a demonstrated ability to learn new technical domains quickly
  • Strong skills in stakeholder interviews, requirements gathering, and translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Experience developing use cases, cost-benefit analyses, and executive-ready documentation

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with data classification frameworks and security/compliance standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001)
  • Experience with endpoint management, IT asset management, or physical device inventory tools
  • Prior consulting or contract-based Business Analyst experience
  • Familiarity with higher-education or nonprofit technology environments
