Virtual Biomedical Engineer information

What is a virtual biomedical engineer?

A Virtual Biomedical Engineer is a professional who applies engineering principles to solve problems in medicine and biology, but works remotely using digital tools and technologies. They may design medical devices, analyze biological data, assist with telemedicine solutions, or provide remote technical support for medical equipment. Virtual Biomedical Engineers often collaborate with healthcare teams, researchers, and manufacturers through online platforms, ensuring efficient communication and project management without the need to be physically present on-site.

How does a virtual biomedical engineer typically collaborate with healthcare professionals and technical teams remotely?

As a Virtual Biomedical Engineer, you will regularly interact with clinicians, hospital staff, and IT specialists using digital communication tools such as video conferencing, remote desktop software, and email. Effective collaboration involves providing technical support for medical equipment, troubleshooting device issues, and assisting with equipment integration into clinical workflows—all from a remote location. You may also participate in virtual meetings to discuss project updates, compliance requirements, and user training. Developing strong communication skills and being proactive in following up on requests helps ensure seamless remote teamwork and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual biomedical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Biomedical Engineer, you need a solid background in biomedical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in biomedical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, medical device regulations, and telehealth platforms is crucial. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills help you collaborate remotely with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These competencies are vital for effectively designing, testing, and supporting medical technologies in a virtual work environment.

What is the difference between Virtual Biomedical Engineer vs Clinical Biomedical Engineer?

AspectVirtual Biomedical EngineerClinical Biomedical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biomedical Engineering, certifications may varyBachelor's or Master's in Biomedical Engineering, often with clinical certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote, telehealth settings, or consultingHospitals, clinics, or healthcare facilities
Employer & IndustryMedical device companies, telehealth providers, consulting firmsHospitals, healthcare institutions, biomedical service companies

The Virtual Biomedical Engineer primarily works remotely, providing technical support and consulting for medical devices, while the Clinical Biomedical Engineer works onsite in healthcare facilities, maintaining and repairing medical equipment. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in work environment and daily responsibilities.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid

Posting Start Date: 8/26/26

Posting End Date: 9/26/26

About the Role

We are looking for a Modeling & Simulation Scientist to join our team. In this role you will use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) expertise to provide support for design, development, and optimization of medical devices. This role offers a unique opportunity to model cardiovascular hemodynamics, supporting product innovation, design iteration, and regulatory submissions. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will use simulation-driven insights to predict device performance, identify worst-case scenarios, and accelerate product development through virtual testing. The successful candidate will perform CFD analyses by applying principles of fluid mechanics, material behavior, and medical device durability to solve complex engineering challenges and advance patient care.

This position will be located at our facility in either Flagstaff or Phoenix, Arizona , with the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities
  • Provide analytical support in the areas of medical product design, optimization and new product development.
  • Perform CFD/FSI modeling of transient flow, species transport, porous jumps, multiphase flow, mass transport and heat transfer analysis to support accelerated product design and evaluation.
  • Perform other analytical procedures that will assist in the application, design and manufacture of medical products.
  • Advance the use of data driven modeling using AI/ML and PINNs techniques.
  • Develop techniques to combine data driven modeling with physics-based modeling.
  • Verify and validate computational analyses.
  • Support continuous improvement of modeling workflows, tools, and best practices.
  • Review and provide feedback on modeling approaches and analyses performed by peers.
  • Document and communicate results through technical reports and presentations.
Required Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in computational fluid dynamics analysis
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics software, specifically analysis in Fluent, Star CCM+, COMSOL or similar with related pre- and post-processing software
  • Experience in cardiovascular hemodynamics
  • Programming or scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for automation and data processing
  • Experience creating user-defined functions for modeling; experience with AI/ML
  • Advanced experience in solid modeling, specifically SolidWorks
  • Proven ability to embrace new concepts and learn quickly
  • Ability to independently manage multiple simulation projects, solve complex modeling challenges, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
  • Ability to travel up to 5%
Desired Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering
  • Experience with verification and validation of computational models, and with techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
  • Experience with thrombosis modeling
