What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, bar licensure, and strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Familiarity with digital case management platforms, secure communication tools, and e-filing systems is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication are essential soft skills for remote client representation. These competencies ensure effective, compliant legal service delivery and foster trust with clients in a virtual environment.

How does a virtual attorney typically collaborate with clients and colleagues remotely?

Virtual attorneys primarily use secure digital tools—such as video conferencing, encrypted email, and cloud-based document management platforms—to communicate and collaborate. Regular virtual meetings and collaborative documents are common, and many firms use client portals to facilitate secure document sharing and case updates. While remote work offers flexibility, it also requires strong organizational skills to manage multiple clients and stay responsive. Building rapport and trust virtually can be a challenge, but proactive communication and clear expectations help foster strong professional relationships.

What is a Virtual Attorney?

A Virtual Attorney is a licensed lawyer who provides legal services to clients remotely, often using digital communication tools like email, video calls, and secure document-sharing platforms. This allows clients to receive legal advice and representation without needing to visit a physical office. Virtual attorneys can handle a wide range of legal matters, including contract review, legal consultations, and even court representation in some cases. They offer flexibility and convenience, making legal services more accessible and cost-effective.

Job description

Rate: $26.00/hour
Type: Part-time
Location: Remote — open to applicants anywhere in the U.S.

Equivity is seeking a skilled virtual paralegal with recent law firm experience and proficiency in at least two practice areas, such as litigation, criminal, estate planning, immigration, bankruptcy, corporate law, or family law.
In this role, you’ll work as part of a dedicated, long-term team of legal professionals, partnering directly with attorneys while remaining fully supported by Equivity’s internal operations and leadership. We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional with strong knowledge of law who can manage multiple cases, anticipate attorney needs, and thrive in a remote environment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Intake & Case Setup: Assist with client intake, gather relevant documents and information, open and organize case files, and ensure proper documentation at the outset of each matter
  • Case Management: Manage matters from intake through resolution, maintaining organized files and ensuring all deadlines and requirements are tracked and met
  • Document Drafting: Draft, edit, and format legal documents including pleadings, correspondence, discovery, and other case-related materials
  • Court Filings: Prepare and file documents in accordance with court rules, including e-filing and maintaining proof of service and filing confirmations
  • Discovery Support: Prepare and respond to discovery, track deadlines, coordinate document collection, and assist with document review and production
  • Legal Research: Conduct legal and factual research and prepare summaries for attorney review
  • Trial Preparation: Assist with pretrial preparation, including exhibits, witness lists, trial binders, and coordination of logistics
  • Calendar & Deadline Management: Maintain case calendars, monitor deadlines, and coordinate hearings, filings, and appointments
  • Client & Third-Party Communication: Communicate professionally with clients, courts, opposing counsel, and vendors to support case progression
  • Case Progression & Follow-Up: Proactively follow up on outstanding items, ensure matters continue moving forward, and anticipate attorney needs
  • Criminal Law Support (Preferred): Provide support on criminal matters as needed, including preparing and organizing case files, assisting with filings and discovery, tracking court dates, and supporting overall case management through resolution
About You:

  • 3+ years of recent law firm paralegal experience in at least two legal areas (litigation, criminal, estate planning, bankruptcy, corporate law, or family law)
  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Minimum availability of 20 hours/week to start
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple cases
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skill
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe
  • Experience with legal software (Clio or similar is a plus)
  • Experience with criminal law a plus
  • Windows-based computer preferred
  • Availability and responsiveness within 1 hour during standard business hours (9:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
Why You’ll Love Working Here
At Equivity, you are part of a dedicated, internally managed team of legal professionals—not a temporary placement. We provide ongoing work with established attorneys while maintaining the flexibility of remote work. You’ll be supported by an experienced operations team and work in a collaborative, professional environment that values quality and long-term relationships.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid sick time and employee discounts
  • Annual performance bonuses
  • 6-month pay review with potential hourly increase based on performance
  • Reimbursement of certain expenses
  • Professional development and advancement opportunities
  • Supportive and inclusive remote work culture
