Position General Summary:

The Paraprofessional, Florida Scholars Academy is a valued member of the educational team, providing essential support to instructors, instructional leaders, and students within the juvenile justice system. This role involves working closely with instructors, school counselors, and facility providers to create a positive and inclusive learning environment, assisting in classroom management, and providing individualized support to students.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Deliver feedback to students which contributes to a climate where they are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures in accordance with state statues.

  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process; provide small group and/or individual instruction to students as needed.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents/guardians, and other professionals on a regular basis.

  • Facilitate incoming parent questions and provide responses in a timely manner by conducting necessary research.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships by consulting regularly with internal and external stakeholders; collaborate with peers to enhance the overall quality of feedback.

  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents/guardians, peers, and the community.

  • Assume responsibility for meeting their grading assignments as set forth by the Instructional Leader.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding in the curriculum of course that is being supported and the school-wide student performance goals.

  • Provide services in person at the assigned facility to meet the needs of students under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).

  • Serve as an instructional facilitator in the absence of an Instructor, Florida Scholars Academy at the discretion of the Instructional Leader.

  • Compile and organize notes, documents, and other relevant materials from instructional staff to present at meetings (i.e. treatment sessions, virtual transition, and community re-entry team meetings); attend the meetings.

  • Assist with student intake and exit processes, proctoring exams, and monitoring student progress.

  • Support other academic related topics established at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools, Florida Scholars Academy, Regional Director, Florida Scholars Academy, or Instructional Leader, Florida Scholars Academy.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of basic technology, including software applications, hardware, and navigating digital tools, with the ability to effectively apply them to daily tasks and troubleshoot common issues.

  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others.

  • All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college, two years of education from an accredited college or passing of any of the following examinations: CLAST (College Level Academic Skills Test), ETS Praxis Parapro, or another state-approved test, or equivalent years of experience

Experience:

  • One year of relevant experience

  • Prior experience working with special needs students, preferred
