Sr. IBM Power Systems Infrastructure Engineer - Brooklyn, NY
Senior IBM Power Systems Infrastructure Engineer
(IBM i / AIX / PowerVM / FlashSystem Administrator)
Position Overview
Rainbow Shops is seeking a highly experienced Senior IBM Power Systems Infrastructure Engineer to support and administer our enterprise IBM Power Systems environment. This role is responsible for the operational management, maintenance, optimization, troubleshooting, and support of mission-critical IBM i (AS/400), AIX, PowerVM, and IBM FlashSystem infrastructure supporting a large-scale retail enterprise environment.
This is a hands-on senior infrastructure role requiring deep technical expertise across IBM Power technologies, virtualization, storage, operating systems, and enterprise operations. The ideal candidate must be capable of working independently within a fast-paced production environment with high uptime and operational expectations.
This position is required to work onsite at our Brooklyn, NY corporate office and data center environments. This is not a remote role.
Environment Overview
The current environment includes:
• Two IBM Power hardware stacks
• Multiple IBM i (AS/400) logical partitions
• Multiple AIX logical partitions
• IBM PowerVM virtualization
• Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)
• IBM FlashSystem 5100 storage arrays
• SAN-connected infrastructure
• Enterprise backup and disaster recovery platforms
• Production retail and enterprise workloads
• Integration with monitoring, backup, and security systems
The environment supports critical business operations and requires a high level of uptime, stability, security, and operational discipline.
Key Responsibilities
IBM i (AS/400) Administration
• Provide daily administration and operational support for IBM i environments
• Monitor system health, performance, and capacity utilization
• Perform system tuning and optimization activities
• Manage user profiles, authorities, and security configurations
• Administer PTF deployments and operating system upgrades
• Manage jobs, subsystems, output queues, and spool files
• Support backup, recovery, and BRMS operations
• Administer TCP/IP services including DNS, FTP, SSH, and related network services
• Manage IFS permissions, structure, and access controls
• Maintain and renew SSL/TLS certificates
• Troubleshoot system, application, and connectivity issues
• Coordinate with application vendors and internal support teams
AIX Administration
• Administer and maintain AIX logical partitions
• Perform OS patching, upgrades, and maintenance activities
• Manage filesystems, storage, and Logical Volume Manager (LVM)
• Monitor and optimize system performance
• Administer users, permissions, and security configurations
• Troubleshoot hardware, operating system, and network-related incidents
• Support NIM administration and deployment processes
Power Systems & Virtualization
• Administer IBM PowerVM virtualization environments
• Provision and manage LPARs
• Administer and maintain VIOS environments
• Perform firmware updates and lifecycle management
• Conduct resource allocation and capacity planning activities
• Coordinate hardware maintenance and infrastructure upgrades
Storage Administration
• Administer IBM FlashSystem 5100 storage environments
• Coordinate SAN zoning and storage connectivity
• Provision and allocate storage resources
• Monitor storage performance and optimize utilization
• Manage firmware updates and storage lifecycle activities
• Support replication, snapshot, and recovery processes
• Troubleshoot storage performance and connectivity issues
Operational & Infrastructure Support
• Participate in incident response and root cause analysis
• Support change management and maintenance activities
• Maintain accurate infrastructure and operational documentation
• Develop operational standards, procedures, and best practices
• Coordinate with infrastructure, networking, security, and application teams
• Participate in after-hours support and scheduled maintenance windows as needed
• Support a mission-critical production retail environment with high availability requirements
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of experience administering IBM Power Systems environments
• Strong experience with IBM i (AS/400) administration
• Strong experience with AIX administration
• Hands-on experience with IBM PowerVM and VIOS
• Experience administering IBM FlashSystem storage environments
• Experience with SAN infrastructure and storage technologies
• Enterprise backup and disaster recovery experience
• Experience supporting production enterprise infrastructure environments
• Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Retail industry experience
• Experience with BRMS
• Experience with HA/DR technologies including PowerHA
