Job description

The Intrepid Museum is seeking an experienced Assistant Exhibits Fabricator. Reporting to the Lead Exhibits Fabricator, the Assistant Exhibits Fabricator builds and installs exhibit cases, barriers, panels, pedestals, and supporting exhibition elements from a variety of materials including but not limited to woods, papers, plastics, glass, fabrics, foams, and metals. This individual is Self-sufficient and capable of managing projects with minimal supervision with strong ability to problem solve and adapt fabrication methods as needed based on project demands.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $62,500.


Responsibilities include the following:


  • Construct and install museum exhibit structures including but not limited to, walls, floors, case work, text panels, photographic murals, vinyl wall treatments, and artifact mounts using a range of materials and tools/equipment. (e.g. table saw, drill press or router)
  • Read, understand, and implement shop drawings.
  • Compile material, cut, and hardware lists.
  • Operate and maintain digitally controlled fabrication equipment, including CNC router, plasma cutter, 3D printer, vinyl cutter.
  • Identify and conduct repairs, refinishing, touch-ups, and preventative maintenance to ensure exhibitions remain in excellent condition.
  • Perform historical restoration work using appropriate conservation-minded techniques. Restore and reproduce architectural features, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment within an aircraft carrier environment.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication and installation challenges while maintaining project schedules.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with standard finishing techniques.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge in a variety of engineering and scientific principles.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Observe all shop safety and risk management procedures in public and work spaces.
  • Practice knowledge and ability to safely use power tools and other shop equipment.
  • Realize deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to work within a team environment and with the public.
  • Ability to work overtime, nights, and weekends as required.
  • Other duties as required by management and project demands.


Qualified candidates will possess BS/BA degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent. 2 years of carpentry experience in a museum environment or equivalent. Must be self-motivated with good problem-solving, judgment, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated track record of high ethical character. Ability to understand sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Strong interpersonal and communication skills at all levels of the organization, from line workers to senior management level. Strong critical thinking, complex problem solving skills. Highly organized and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Proficient computer knowledge, including word processing and database software
