Technical Producer/Director, Digital Arts

The Opportunity

The Technical Producer/Director oversees all aspects of Digital Arts production, ensuring seamless support for Banff Centre programs requiring video, audio and digital production, while delivering high-quality content for Marketing and Communications. This role leads the planning, execution, and delivery of a wide range of digital arts projects, including video production, animation/VFX, audio/ video post-production, live streaming, multi-camera productions, professional music recording, XR, gaming, virtual production, performance capture, AI generated content and other emerging technologies.

The Technical Producer/Director provides creative and technical leadership to ensure the highest production standards across all digital arts initiatives. The role supervises creative and logistic requirements, provides creative direction to post-production teams, and serves as video director/producer when required.

The Technical Director/Producer collaborates with marketing, programming teams and all Banff Centre divisions to define and achieve digital/media production objectives. Additionally, this role is accountable for developing annual resource plans and budgets during program planning cycles ensuring accurate forecasting for equipment, facilities, crews and project costs; and is responsible for day-to-day and annual planning, scheduling and conflict identification of Digital Arts and production resources. This role also contributes to the evolution of the department as it develops under the new strategic plan

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Director, Digital Arts, below are some key accountabilities:

Overall Planning

  • Collaborate with marketing, programs and production teams to define production objectives, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Conduct annual technical and studio assessments, prepare department cost estimates, identify personnel and resource needs, and determine studio, venue, and production space requirements.
  • Plan and allocate annual resources within capacity, ensuring equipment, personnel, and time are optimized for each project.
  • Responsible for the annual plan for the recording, editing, and post-production of performances, events, and artistic projects.
  • Contributes to the development of systems that enable efficient departmental operations.

Video and Digital Media Production

  • Ensure high-quality video capture for video productions and live events, oversee each stage of production maintaining high standards of quality, and timely delivery, directing productions when required.
  • Supervise live-streaming of institutional events and performances, directing multi-cam productions when required.
  • Create productions schedule frameworks that outline pre-production, shooting/capturing editing and post-production timelines.
  • Develop and implement industry standard workflows/ pipelines for digital media initiatives
  • Collaborate with program and production teams to develop and produce video and audio content and recordings that support educational and artistic programming. Work with the marketing team to develop video content specific to marketing and communications objectives.
  • Trouble shoot production challenges and find creative solutions to meet project goals and deadlines
  • Set delivery and publication dates, ensuring alignment with program and marketing/ communications goals.
  • Provide technical producing expertise and creative direction to ensure high-quality media production
  • Provide ongoing technical and creative mentorship to the team

Audio Recording Production (Working Closely with The Senior Recording Engineer:)

  • Plan and oversee audio production schedules, ensuring timely execution of audio projects.
  • Oversee the recording and mixing of music performances, recording programs and artistic collaborations.

Equipment/Facility Management

  • Plan the acquisition, and supervise the installation, upgrading and maintenance of technical production equipment, including cameras, lighting, sound systems, video production studios, editing suites, recording studios and Storage Area Network (SAN) and infrastructure supporting the SAN, compute resources, gaming infrastructure, XR hardware, virtual production facilities and AI tools.
  • Guide the capital planning in concert with the Director of Digital Arts, preparing capital equipment and facility plans; and preparing capital and day to day operating spending plans.

Post Secondary Digital Arts Programming

  • Develop learning goals and practical hands-on training opportunities for programs in Digital Arts.
  • Oversee the coordination of program applications for the media and production area, adjudication and notification processes, ensuring timely recruitment.
  • Ensure all program requirements and professional development objectives agreed to under the terms of the learning agreements and/or program mandate are met
  • Manage the design and development of programs, group events and training sessions as appropriate in collaboration with the Director of Digital Arts. Contribute to the sourcing of program faculty and guest speakers
  • Negotiate contracts for faculty and guest speakers as required.

Financial & Administration

  • Manage/oversee production administration tasks including but not limited to contracts, billings, tracking of expenses, purchase orders, payments and rentals.
  • Plan and manage administration of capital purchases in accordance with established policies and procedures and under the guidance of the Director od Digital Arts.
  • Assist the Director in developing the annual budget and staffing plan for the Digital Arts department.

Strategic Forward Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and help execute a multi-year strategic plan for Digital Arts growth.
  • Lead Research and Development initiatives, deploy and pilot new technologies and collaborate with Banff Centre and external partners and programs for co-productions and departmental advancements
  • Contribute to capacity building through targeted hiring/ training and assist with staffing and budget forecasting aligned with departmental and institutional goals

Human Resource Management, Team Building and Interdivisional Cooperation

  • Inspire and facilitate a strong sense of team spirit and working practices to enable staff to function as a high performing motivated team at all times through maintaining open communication, clear objectives and priorities, and a culture of positive behavioral intent that is consistent and in alignment with Banff Centre values and is welcoming and inclusive, supporting a diverse workforce.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements
  • Completion of university degree in a Digital Arts production/related discipline or equivalent professional experience
  • Ten years+ digital arts production expertise with demonstrated collaborative team management skills
  • Exceptional production and project management skills
  • Strong scheduling, and budgetary management skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines and a positive attitude while working under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of lighting, sounds, video and editing workflows
  • Practical knowledge of composition, lighting, cameras and editing
  • Hands on technical /creative camera operation skills an asset
  • Experience in music recording an asset
  • An understanding and interest in Virtual Production, Gaming, XR and AI is desirable
  • Experience with cross-sector artistic collaboration is desirable
  • Education and training experience is desirable

Employment Terms and Benefits
  • In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The salary range for this position is $82,455 - $122,451 based on experience.
