To excel in video transcription, strong listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a solid grasp of grammar and spelling are essential, often complemented by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with transcription software (such as Express Scribe or Otter.ai) and a comfortable home office setup are commonly required. Staying organized and proactively communicating with clients about difficult segments ensures consistent, high-quality transcripts.

Job description

Location: Houston, TX, and the surrounding metropolitan area. Assignment-based across federal, state, and deposition proceedings.
Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Compensation: $60.00 per hour with a two-hour minimum per proceeding. Travel reimbursed per contract. Contractor-provided professional equipment, or CLFC-furnished equipment on designated federal assignments. Assignment volume and annual earnings are not guaranteed.
Schedule: Assignment-based depositions and proceedings, frequently synchronized with a CLFC court reporter. Assignments are dispatched and confirmed through CLFC's BRIDGE App. Assignments are accepted individually; contractors remain free to accept or decline based on availability and location.
Agency Environment: Federal, state, and commercial legal proceedings. CLFC is a federal contractor delivering court reporting, legal videography, and transcription services. Certain proceedings require federal security screening.

Position Overview

CLFC is expanding its nationwide federal legal-support practice, supporting U.S. Attorney's Offices, federal courts, administrative proceedings, state agencies, and commercial litigation. CLFC is building its legal videographer roster in the Houston, TX market. CLFC directly contracts and self-performs this work.

This independent-contractor opportunity offers a competitive hourly rate with a guaranteed two-hour minimum per proceeding and coordination with CLFC's court reporters on synchronized video-transcript proceedings. Videographers are considered for recurring federal, state, and deposition assignments as CLFC receives and performs court reporting awards nationwide, rather than for a single engagement. Assignment volume and annual earnings are not guaranteed.

The successful videographer is an experienced professional who produces a certified, defensible video record, maintains chain of custody, and operates with strict confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce a certified, accurate legal video record of depositions and proceedings in accordance with applicable federal and jurisdictional standards.
  • Synchronize the video record with the court reporter's transcript where realtime or synchronized delivery is required.
  • Set up, test, and operate a professional HD or 4K legal video system with dual-channel audio, redundant media capture, on-screen time and date stamping, and backup recording at each proceeding.
  • Maintain a documented chain of custody for all recorded media and exhibits.
  • Deliver finished media through secure, encrypted channels within the required turnaround.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality at all times, including in secure and grand-jury-adjacent settings.
  • Coordinate scheduling, claims, and confirmations through CLFC's BRIDGE App.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of professional legal videography experience in depositions or legal proceedings.
  • U.S. citizen or national, or lawful permanent resident seeking citizenship, with U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Ownership of a professional HD or 4K legal video system with dual-channel audio, redundant media capture, time and date stamping, and secure encrypted file transfer, or use of CLFC-furnished equipment on designated federal assignments.
  • Working knowledge of deposition and federal legal video standards and defensible-record requirements.
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation where the assignment requires it.
  • Reliable availability to travel to assignment locations within the assigned market.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Legal Video Specialist (CLVS) or equivalent professional certification.
  • Membership in the American Guild of Court Videographers (AGCV).
  • Experience supporting federal proceedings such as U.S. District Court or U.S. Attorney's Office matters.
  • Experience with realtime synchronization between video and stenographic transcript.
  • Availability across multiple markets or willingness to travel regionally.
  • Existing professional experience coordinating with court reporters.
Compensation and Engagement Details
  • Independent Contractor (1099) engagement.
  • $60.00 per hour with a two-hour minimum per proceeding, so short proceedings are fairly compensated.
  • Assignments are accepted individually; contractors remain free to accept or decline based on availability and location.
  • Travel reimbursed per contract and assignment terms.
  • Contractor-provided professional equipment; CLFC furnishes equipment on designated federal assignments.
  • Assignment dispatch, claims, confirmations, and invoicing handoff managed through CLFC's BRIDGE App, with administrative support for credentialing and payment.
  • Videographers are considered for recurring federal, state, and deposition assignments as CLFC receives and performs court reporting awards nationwide, rather than for a single engagement, with opportunity to be named to CLFC federal-contract key-personnel rosters.
  • Assignment volume and annual earnings are not guaranteed.
