What does a video producer do?

Video producers manage film projects. As a video producer, your responsibilities are to take a film from pre-production through post-production, ensuring that the project reaches the target audience and turns a profit. Your job duties as a video producer are to review content, book the cast and crew, organize financing, manage the budget, negotiate with vendors, ensure that everyone gets paid, and set up distribution channels. The job of a video producer is multi-faceted and fast-paced.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video producer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Producer, you need expertise in video production, storytelling, project management, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating your work. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and camera equipment is typically required, as well as knowledge of media workflows. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality video content on time and within budget while meeting client or organizational objectives.

What are some common challenges a video producer faces when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Video Producers often juggle several projects at once, which requires strong organizational and time-management skills. Balancing tight deadlines, coordinating with diverse teams (such as editors, cinematographers, and clients), and adapting to last-minute changes are frequent challenges. Effective communication and the ability to prioritize tasks are crucial to ensure each project stays on track and meets quality standards. Building a reliable workflow and using project management tools can help mitigate these challenges and keep productions running smoothly.

  • Work with the Pre-Production Specialist to coordinate talent, locations, equipment, travel, and other production needs.
  • Operate professional cameras, lenses, lighting, microphones, audio equipment, teleprompters, and related video equipment.
  • Lead or support production in-studio and on location, capturing high-quality ย video and audio for hunting, shooting, outdoor, product, interview, and lifestyle content.
  • Direct talent and manage production elements to achieve the creative vision.
  • Own post-production from footage organization through final delivery, including editing, sound design, color correction/grading, motion graphics, and final export deliverables.
  • Create engaging short- and long-form content optimized for social, web, YouTube, and other digital platforms, adapting content for multiple formats, aspect ratios, lengths, and platform specifications.ย
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, timelines, and established production workflows.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to incorporate feedback and ensure final content meets project objectives and Vortex brand standards.
  • Maintain organized project files, footage, audio, graphics, and final deliverables.
  • Stay current with evolving video production technology, editing techniques, formats, and trends.
  • Travel approximately 3-4 times per year for location shoots, with occasional additional travel as project needs require.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-4 years of professional video production experience with a portfolio demonstrating strong video storytelling and editing.
  • Practical experience with hunting, shooting, and outdoor recreation.
  • Strong post-production skills with advanced knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop.
  • Demonstrated ability to take video projects from raw footage through polished final delivery.
  • Strong understanding of editing, storytelling, pacing, sound design, color correction/grading, and motion graphics.
  • Ability to independently operate cameras and audio equipment in studio and field environments.
  • Experience working through all phases of production: pre-production, production, and post-production.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across departments.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems creatively, and adapt to changing production environments.
